Are we supposed to do that? Or with modern engines does it not matter? Is it recommended to let the engine run for a little bit before driving or just drive away right after ignition?

    Thanks.

Only when it's below freezing and sits all night. Otherwise I start her and go. The VQ35HR is one helluva motor.

In cold weather you're supposed to let the engine warm up before taking off. Well that's what my uncle told me.

if it's sitting outside, and it's cold, i let it warm up.

like this morning, after i got out of the shower, i went outside and defrosted my windows and all that, and then i put my clothes on. when i left, my car was all toasty and warm.

I might sit for like twenty seconds at the most, letting it run.

No, but I don't get the RMP's above a certain level until it's warm.

I have heard conflicting things about whether idling is necessary.

Do you turn your car on? And does it return the favor?

I was so sure that was where this thread was heading ;)

My wife and I both have vehicles with remote start, so in the winter we let the car heat up, and in the summer we let it cool off....then drive.

Probably a waste of gas but it is much more comfortable.

Here are some other Myths associated with idling.

Myth #1: The engine should be warmed up before driving. Reality: Idling is not an effective way to warm up your vehicle, even in cold weather. The best way to do this is to drive the vehicle. With today's modern engines, you need no more than 30 seconds of idling on winter days before driving away.

Myth #2: Idling is good for your engine. Reality: Excessive idling can actually damage your engine components, including cylinders, spark plugs, and exhaust systems. Fuel is only partially combusted when idling because an engine does not operate at its peak temperature. This leads to the build up of fuel residues on cylinder walls that can damage engine components and increase fuel consumption.

Myth #3: Shutting off and restarting your vehicle is hard on the engine and uses more gas than if you leave it running. Reality: Frequent restarting has little impact on engine components like the battery and the starter motor. Component wear caused by restarting the engine is estimated to add $10 per year to the cost of driving, money that will likely be recovered several times over in fuel savings from reduced idling. The bottom line is that more than ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting the engine.

MYTH: Engines need to warm up with a long idle period, especially in cold weather.
FACT: Modern cars need little warm-up time and are most efficient when being driven. Engines require no more than 30 seconds of warming-up, followed by driving at moderate speed for the first few minutes. In fact, idling in cold weather causes excessive wear on the engine.

I idle for like 5-10 seconds. Anymore than that, you smell exhaust ...

My remote start doesnt work when its below 40 degrees. It defies the whole purpose of having that. Once I got so frustrated that I kept trying to start it with the control and I eventually blew out the starter.

The temperature gauge is not there just for show. It shows how COLD the engine is, and where it should be while running and when it gets too hot.

If gears and the engine itself are too cold, most of the parts will not be lubricated enough to prevent friction. When it's warmer, the liquid spreads all over the parts that need the lubrication and the car is ready to drive.

Start the car and then start driving when that needle is at least moving away from the C in the temperature gauge. If the needle just sits there, you may damage some parts.
