Mattj had a discussion about this on 610 before he left, he was talking about how they should have a bunch of retired NFL players play Rock Band at the 50 yard line. That would be freaking sweet, heh
why not do something different like a comedy routine, a game show, or an 'NFL Greats' Tribute or something? there's so many ways the NFL could go with this... i'm sick of the mellow music during the halftime show! it always seems so out of place... get that crowd bumpin or don't come at all!
I saw the Who last year...they are not how you remember them. That's all I'm saying. On the plus side, I found an awesome remastered Japanese pressing of "Tommy" from the 90's. It sounds incredible.
By reading this thread you see what the problem is. There is really no artist anyone could pick that at least half of the people watching the super bowl would enjoy. They try and pick people who have the broadest appeal, but it just doesn't work. I really like many of the performers they've had recently, but I didn't like any of the performances. I don't think anyone could really make it work. They just look out of place trying to play a 15 or 20 minute concert in the middle of a football field.
So did I, and I saw Daltrey this year also. Of course they are not the same, but they're still better (sadly) than a lot of groups out there. Just MHO. Anyway, they really should get some newer artists- or at least mine the 90s or 80s, if they want to go back. U2 was a good choice several years ago. So would Metallica (although don't know about the broad appeal), REM, Pearl Jam (again, not sure how popular they are now), etc. When you look at the top concert draws for 2009, you still see how many of the "old fart" groups are up there, but there are others as well- of course, Jonas is #7, so maybe they would work: 1.U2, $123 2.Bruce Springsteen, $94.5 3.Elton John/Billy Joel, $88 4.Britney Spears, $82.5 5.AC/DC, $77.9 6.Kenny Chesney, $71.1 7.Jonas Brothers, $69.8 8.Dave Matthews Band, $56.9 9.Fleetwood Mac, $54.5 10.Metallica, $53.4 11.Nickelback, $47.4 12.Walking With Dinosaurs, $46.2 13.Miley Cyrus, $45 14.Trans-Siberian Orchestra, $43.7 15.Eagles, $42.8 16.Keith Urban, $42.7 17.Celine Dion, $42.6 18.Rascal Flatts, $42.2 19.Coldplay, $40.8 20.Paul McCartney, $40.7 21.Phish, $37.2 22.Brad Paisley, $35.4 23.Jeff Dunham, $34.6 24.No Doubt, $33.9 25.Cher, $33.2 26.Lil' Wayne, $32.1 27.KISS, $30.5 28.American Idols Live, $30.1 29.Toby Keith, $29.7 30.Bette Midler, $29.1 31.Dane Cook, $28.1 32.Blink-182, $26.7 33.The Dead, $26.4 34.Beyoncé, $26.4 35.Il Divo, $26.0 36.Taylor Swift, $25.5 37.Def Leppard, $24.8 38.Cirque du Soleil "Saltimbanco," $24.2 39.Mötley Crüe, $23.5 40.Depeche Mode, $22.3 41.George Strait, $22 42.Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, $21.9 43.Kings of Leon, $21.8 44.Leonard Cohen, $21.3 45.Bob Dylan, $20.4 46."So You Think You Can Dance," $19.7 47.Journey, $18.8 48.Jimmy Buffet, $18.7 49.Luis Miguel, $18.5 50.The Killers, $18.4
You can't go wrong with Pearl Jam. I really don't care though, I think The Who, or what's left of them, was a fine choice as well.
I have no problems with it. Probably because Classic Rock is my favorite Genre though. But I CAN see why many have a problem with it. I'm usually too drunk by halftime to give a damn, honestly.
I love The Who's music but I haven't had any interest in seeing them since the early '90's. "Hope I die before it get old!" just doesn't sound right coming from 60 somethings.
AC/DC should do it every year. Wasn't there a thread a while back about how Bon Jovi was supposed to do it this year? If that's the Who then you may as well get Axl Rose's solo band to play, the one that they're still calling GnR.
Because we all know those Christians are jamming The Who on the church PA system. BTW, I wonder if they'll fart dust on stage?
