I admit, I don't know much about the things they are talking about, but I researched Margaret Sanger yesterday and from what I read it didn't sound like she was a racist to me. Anyone more knowledgeable on her? The youth group I use to be a part of at my church posted this video and I felt it was insanely stupid but figured I'd get the opinion from some folks here that might be more up to date on this issue.
Yes, the women's suffrage movement largely overlapped with both racist elements and a religious zeal to ban alcohol. You could just as easily say that anyone who supports abortion wants to bring back Prohibition. Around the same time, the anarchist movement in the US was largely radical Italian-Americans. Maybe I can make a video explaining how eating pizza is aiding terrorism?
Well, she certainly wasn't in favor of coercing minorities to get abortions. She was actually against abortion: " While there are cases where even the law recognizes an abortion as justifiable if recommended by a physician, I assert that the hundreds of thousands of abortions performed in America each year are a disgrace to civilization." (http://www.bartleby.com/1013/10.html)
If you're trying to suggest that she was in favor of forced sterilization, that certainly doesn't seem consistent with the following quote from her: "We maintain that a woman possessing an adequate knowledge of her reproductive functions is the best judge of the time and conditions under which her child should be brought into the world. We further maintain that it is her right, regardless of all other considerations, to determine whether she shall bear children or not, and how many children she shall bear if she chooses to become a mother"
Don't be silly. It's not bona fide "fit" women we've gotta discourage... just those you-know-whos. "Our failure to segregate morons who are increasing and multiplying ... demonstrates our foolhardy and extravagant sentimentalism." "The most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective." "The undeniably feebleminded should, indeed, not only be discouraged but prevented from propagating their kind." "It now remains for the U.S. government to set a sensible example to the world by offering a bonus or yearly pension to all obviously unfit parents who allow themselves to be sterilized by harmless and scientific means. In this way the moron and the diseased would have no posterity to inherit their unhappy condition. The number of the feeble-minded would decrease and a heavy burden would be lifted from the shoulders of the fit."
