In Mitch Lawrence's ESPN column at their website he reports that Portland is now going after Tracy McGrady and that Bonzi Wells and Brian Grant would be used in a sign and trade agreement if it were to take place. This would be very good for Toronto if they were already convinced that Tracy wasn't staying in town. Grant would help Toronto tremendously since it has become apparent Antonio Davis and Charles Oakley are being shopped around the league. Also Doug Christie wants out and that would leave an open starting spot to Wells and he has proven he can start and perform well under pressure. Now about the Rockets, can they offer Portland anything more than Toronto to try and acquire Brian Grant? Probably not, but if Tracy decides to stay in Toronto or leave for Orlando then our hopes of acquiring Brian Grant will go back up. What do you think of this speculation?

This is a good deal for both teams. It kind of makes me sad if it happens, as I really like Grant, and McGrady. I would love to see either as a Rocket.

Thanks for the info, next time post a link.

How would that work contract wise? McGrady will be a great player, but unless they are planning on additional deals I think that this would weaken Portland. Their greatest asset is their depth and after Pippen and now this possible deal, they would start to become just another talented starting 5. I like Grant and Mcgrady as well but I think Rudy has bigger plans. Perhaps I'm just getting caught up in all of the Drew for Duncan trade talk. [IMG]

If he wanted to, Brian Grant could REALLY screw that up by opting for Free Agency.

It'd actually work contract wise. as combined they make pretty close to $9,000,000.

I want Sheed, even with the technicals. I think he's actually gotten over most of them, and he's gonna elevate to the next level next year. [IMG]

McGrady isn't exactly what they need. Instead of another all-around player, they need the unstoppable single player to key the offense. They Should offer Sheed and Wells for like Carter or Iverson, then keep Grant. There other approach I would think would be trying to match up with Shaq, I would guess Mutumbo might be the best candidate. Maybe they could get him for Wells or Oneal + Grant + Stoudimire. Atl then could sell Grant and Stoud for younger players or picks.

I don't think it's fair at all to say that Grant faded against the Lakers. After a solid series against the Jazz where he was able to play a lot of his minutes at his natural 4 spot, his primary role was to come in and bang heads with Shaq because we couldn't afford to throw our best offensive weapon in Wallace in there to guard Shaq because he would have been in constant foul trouble. That severely limited Grant's effectiveness on the boards and on offense, because he had to epend nearly all of his energy just trying to keep that mammoth
out of the paint. As a result Grant was ineffective for the most part, but certainly it was no fault of his own because matchups
dictated his role in that series.

From what I have read, Tor. wants to keep McGrady. I do not think they would make that deal, simply because if you trade Tmac, you better get a great return. While Grant and Wells are quality players, they will never be the cornerstones of a team. Besides, who will be the secondary scorer after "Air Canada" with Tmac gone?

The only real problem with the Raptors is that they have a coach who believes his own press. [IMG] [IMG]

I'm not sure that Grant opting for free-agency would have any impact on that deal at all - it seems like a foregone conclusion that he will opt out. But for him to get the $8+ million payday that he'll probably be looking for, he'll almost certainly have to go through Portland to get it, because it seems unlikely that any teams are going to want to pony up that kind of free cap space for Grant when there are better options to be had.

Pippen is not getting any younger, and the Blazers need more athletic players to compliment what they have.

I think it is a solid deal for both clubs.

How would that starting lineup work for Portland if grant and wells are traded for Tracy McGrady.

    1. Stoudamire
    2. Tracy McGrady
    3. Pippen
    4. Wallace
    5. Sabonis

What happens to Steve Smith? Whos going to tell him to come off the bench? Tell Pip to come off the bench and he might shoot you.

If Brian Grant opts out of his contract so he can sign a bigger one, this deal would be nixed: You can't S&T two players. I don't think this deal will happen anyway though.

NO WAY does B. Grant opt out of a 9 million dollar guarenteed contract.

He may not be able to get that on today's market.

    Question for Aelliott:

If the Orlando Magic can only get one premier FA, eg. Hill or McGrady and they pay him the 9 mil max and along with that use the 5 and 10 picks but give away the 13 to relieve some of their past trade obligations, would they have enough left over cap space to offer Brian Grant 7-9 mil on the open market assuming he opts out?

I have always thought the Magic were a possibility for Grant. For them to get Hill and Duncan or two top notch FAs like that I have always thought was pretty far fetched. I think they can get 1 but not 2. Thus, I figured with the remaining cap room, they could go after Brian Grant as Doc Rivers likes those type of hustling, work horse type PFs.

If they could draft Pryzbilla at 5, Alexander at 10 and then sign Hill and Grant or McGrady and Grant on the open market, they would be a VERY formidable team.

    MManal,

Here's an article in the Chicago Trib recently that went into a detailed explanation of Orlando's cap situation. http://www.sportstalk.com/nba/rumors/rumortalk/.
To summarize, it said that Orlando could get to $17.9 under the cap if they renounced all of their free agents. That's probably not going to happen, so they most likely can't take on $16M in salary.

Amen. The only thing that holds Paul Allen back from buying every star from every team is the salary cap. I wouldn't even call $80M tip money for him.

Surely after the Lakers series the reason they want McGrady is to perfect the large guard line-up which would result in a starting line-up of
Sablownees, Sheed, Smith, Pip and McGrady,
with Shrimp, Stoudamire as the main subs and leaving them one big player, someone who can play both 4&5, and even start at 5 away from a very good team.

Isn't Grant slated to make something like $9 or $10 million next year?

The guy is good, but completely faded in the Laker's series. Sorry, but I just can't see paying someone that kind of jack when they a)aren't major producers and b)fade against our direct competition for the championship. Let Toronto have him.

Also, how is Portland going to afford Pippy, Wallace, Stoudamire and McGrady's contracts? I just don't see it happening.
