Thought this would be an interesting spin on some of the music threads. What concerts have you been to this year, and what concerts are you planning on going to? For me, I've seen: The Slip Devon Dave Matthews Band (twice) Natalie Merchant Chris Isaak (was with Natalie) Matt Leddy and the Meatcutters I think there are some others that I can't remember. I'm planning on going to: Guster Bela Fleck and the Flecktones Keb' Mo The Music from O Brother Where Art Thou (Called "Down from the Mountain") There are more I will likely go to that haven't been announced yet, or I am not planning right now.
I know I've seen more than a hundred major concerts in my life and more than 1,000 live music shows. I just got back from Biloxi last night after having seen the best concert of my life. The Eagles.
I went to my first concert this summer, the rock festival "Edgefest" that is put on by KDGE in Dallas. The concert was at the Smirnoff Music Center in the hot Texas weather from about 11 in the morning to 10 at night. The lineup of bands wasn't THAT awesome, but some of the bands really rocked hard plus some of the second stage bands weren't bad at all. The main bands there were: Goldfinger Unwritten Law Trik Turner Lit Default Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains Papa Roach and Nickelback Now, some of these bands really sucked live as most of you would probably expect. Unwritten Law was the worst and Default wasn't that great. The two bands that really suprised me the most with their sets were the last two bands, Papa Roach and Nickelback. Papa Roach put on a hard hitting, hard rocking, high energy show where they involved the crowd more than any other band. The Dallas Morning News concert reviewer absolutely trashed Papa Roach because she didn't like the way they played, which is true, they aren't the greatest musicians, but they wanted to perform for the fans more than any other band there IMO. Luckily, a little bit before they played I got to meet the entire band and get them to autograph my program. They were all really cool, but the lead singer Coby Dick had ADD like a mofo, the fool couldn't pay attention to anyone and kept rambling on about what his name would be if he were on tour in Mexico. After Papa Roach gave their awesome performance, I thought Nickelback would be really anticlimatic because I thought they wouldn't be that great of a live band, but they had good energy and benefitted from being the headliners. Their stage setup was 50 times better than any other band and they had all the pyro in the world for their set. Lit was the best 'second tier' band at the Concert and was the first to really get the crowd on its feet when they played "My Own Worst Enemy." Overall, the worst thing about the concert was the heat and I can definitely say that I'll never go to an all day outdoor concert again. If a band I really love plays Edgefest next year I'll just go in the afternoon when the bigger bands start to play.
vengeance -- where is keb mo playing??? you were telling me about him earlier. i'm trying to get tickets to john mayer...
I have seen Korn Puddle of Mudd (with korn) Deadsy (with korn) I wanna go see Warped Tour but i need to hurry up and get tickets cuz they come to cincy the 31, i prob wont end up going so i am pretty pissed. I went to a concert last year and that was Blink182 New Found Glory (with blink) Alkaline Trio (with blink)
Where would I get these tickets for John Mayer in Austin?? I read somewhere it's at "The Backyard"...but i can't find it anywhere on ticketmaster.com...
I'm going to see John Prine at Verizon Wireless in September and Bruce Springsteen at the Compaq Center in November.
Hardly any of the bands I like ever came to Houston. Over the past twelve months I've seen... Sigur Ros Built to Spill Steve Malkmus Gorillaz Beta Band Mercury Rev Bob Dylan Fugazi The Strokes Spiritualized ...that's all I can remember Coming up is the double-bill of Queens of the Stone Age & ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. That concert should kick ass!
I don't attend many concerts, but I will be seeing Bob Dylan at Key Arena on October 4th. I last saw him on October 6th, 2001.
I'd like to see Better Than Ezra. They were in the Houston area for Mardi Gras down in Galveston. They'll be here again, I forgot when. Now, I just need my tickets, and I'll be smitten happy.
Max -- well, you are in luck! John Mayer is coming to town with Guster on August 28th. I'm going to see Guster, but if John Mayer is there, I guess I can find out what all the fuss is about. What I have heard of his music I didn't really like, but even if I dislike it, I'm going to see Guster!! Want to go with me? Guster kicks ass. Keb' Mo is coming to Conroe on October 4th. I'm not exactly sure how to get tickets, but I'll see what I can find. Some other shows I just thought about (were at the end of last year) I saw Tim Reynolds and Greg Howard twice. Greg Howard is truly remarkable. Tim was fantastic too, but his Houston show was much better than Dallas. I'm disappointed though -- I REALLY wanted to make it to Phil Lesh and Friends, but I'll be in Oklahoma at the time.
I saw the Who with Counting Crows at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. The Who rocked, but the Crows were better. Unfortunately the Crows only played for like 1/2 an hour, it wasn't even dark yet, and they had none of the screens or stage effecfts on.
