How long do you guys generally keep telling people happy new year? i bring this up because i am still saying it to a few people and generally do the first two weeks of jan...I asked my friend this and she says she says it to everyone on the first greeting of the new year up until the end of feb. I asked a few other ppl and they also say all throughout jan. at least for me it seems a bit too long to keep greeting people happy new year how long do you guys say it for? 1 week 2 weeks? all of jan? into feb?
Maybe the first 3 days or so....then its back to norm <a href="http://photobucket.com/images/cheers%20bar" target="_blank"><img src="http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x8/chicagocubs2006/Boston/CIMG0214.jpg" border="0" alt="Cheers Bar Pictures, Images and Photos"/></a>
the first day of the new year. i don't even like saying it or having it said to me. i will say it but only if someone says it to me first and then it's only to reciprocate. otherwise, i think it is silly cause i think it's implied that...yes...we want all humans to have a happy new year. well...not all humans as there is always somebody we don't want to have a happy new year. maybe we don't want to have a happy new year, either? i like to make it sound like bad words: you: happy new year! me: same to you! i will say "same to you" instead of actually saying it. same with "merry x-mas". then, if someone says "have a merry x-mas and a happy new year", then i'm like already ten steps away by the time they are done saying all that. buh bye.
I'm even quicker than you- I just say "You too" I don't think I have ever run into someone that says Happy New Year in Feb.
To people you haven't seen since NEW YEAR's Eve: "Happy New Year to you"... Why is there "etiquette" to wish someone well wishes for the new year? If you see your coworkers everyday, and someone is on vacation for the first week of January and they get back... you should still wish them a Happy New Year... it doesn't matter how far away... if you frequently talk to this person, but they're away for what you might consider a long time, then just say politely: "Hey, I didn't get to say 'Happy New Year' to you... so Happy New Year, [name of person]!"... I bet you they'll thank you... or say "Happy New Year to you, too!" Even nowadays, people in Spanish will not say the entire "Happy New Year" phrase "Feliz Año Nuevo", but just "Feliz Año"... it's not NEW anymore. What, are you afraid they might get mad and slap you if you say it or something? I don't get why there should be a "time limit"...
