The problem I have with profiling is that we have already seen numerous cases of female suicide bombers. People of every race have been known to carry out terrorist attacks. We're focused on male muslims right now because of 9/11 and last Christmas. But if a plane goes down due to Basque extremists that weren't stopped because they were Spanish rather than Nigerian I don't see how that is any better.

One solution is to strip search everybody but that is obviously inconvenient. Another solution is to strip search nobody. I recently learned that as late as the early eighties people who were going through the green card process were made to stand in a room full of other applicants, naked to receive their health screening. The woman who told me this said it was so humiliating she didn't even tell her husband until years later. Humiliating massive numbers of people because we're paranoid about the off chance of being blown up just seems unwise, if not morally questionable. And it is a small chance, you have a much higher chance of dying in a car accident but we haven't outlawed cars yet.

I suggest we go back to the drawing board on this one and find a better way to secure flights and other potential targets that does not involve naked people.

    Some ideas:
JV suggested just one or two entry airports having very high security. Most airports are not international so I think just increasing the security at the ones that are, for the international sections, might help.
Not letting anyone sit next to another person they are traveling with (exceptions for children under 6, perhaps) allowing passengers to police each other.
Not allowing anyone to bring anything into restrooms. Lockers can be provided next to restrooms in airports and everything down to breastpumps can be provided for the passengers convenience.
Having people check absolutely all luggage (for free).
    - That last one is the hardest one for me to swallow because I always insist on traveling without any checked luggage no matter how long the trip. If I can manage to travel with two kids for four weeks with no checked luggage, you can too. I hate to have my bags lost and I want my stuff while at the airport or on the plane. But if airports and planes had better ways of entertaining children and libraries where you could check out some reading material and return it when you land you wouldn't need to truck everything with you. Business travelers wouldn't be able to work on the flight but business travel is being reduced as it is.
On the plus side, screening people would go faster.

I thought Heathrow already had a scanner where they can virtually see passengers naked as they walk through it?

    Here's a link: http://www.metronews.ca/calgary/canada/article/413749--big-brother-bs

I guess only Amsterdam, Moscow and Phoenix are using them at the moment.

Personally I think the biggest problem is that airports don't focus at all on people LEAVING the country when compared to focus on those ENTERING the coutnry. This includes the US.

That's 50% of the equation which can be monitored with the same method as the arrivals without having to cook up a borderline racist plan.

Think for a second, on average, how much quicker it is to leave a country (post check in) than it is to arrive in a country. If every airport did its share of the work and covered departures better, I think it would go a long way in sorting this problem out.

Why do we have to wear clothes in an airport? I am willing to fly naked if Bush believes there are WMD on the plane.

I love the lady in the video who can't even hide the fact that she agrees with the douche who suggested racism.

Great post Ronny. Here's what the x-ray images look like:

I don't think people should complain about this being an invasion of privacy just because they have body image issues. I work out, I'm not hairy, and I shouldn't be deprived of every possible safety measure because of the complacency of the general American population.

Terrorism is everyone's problem. Wouldn't you like for my country to search harder on departure before entering your country?

Anyone who agrees with the statement above is not only not an American, but obviously hates what this country stands for. The wills of the majority may never infringe on the rights of the minority. People who say this filth disgust me. I think I may never vote republican again...

Sure I would but I wasn't saying what is the right strategy just pointing out why countries don't bother to check so hard when somebody is leaving as compared to when they are coming in. Except for by treaty no country is obligated for the safety of another.

Yes, lets stop issuing visas to all Muslim men between ages 18-28. Rery good idea. What about people that look like Muslims but aren't?

Yep. I know it doesn't happen. I was suggesting it starts happening to double up on security easily.

There is another practical problem to that idea. No country has unlimited resources for security and are going to prioritize where they think more screening needs to be done. Any country's government first duty is protect its own citizens so priority is going to be placed on screening incoming visitors than people leaving.
