fixing up a car as a hobby is one thing... i understand rebuilding an engine for better peformance, etc.

but these little 16 and 17 year olds are hardly doing that by putting various stickers, 20" rims on a neon, and coffee cans around the mufflers... come on, you can't seriously think they do this as a hobby! its merely to "look cool" and because "everyone else is doing it"

    ridiculous

Yes, I can. I'm not being politically incorrect at all. You don't have to be foreign OR drive a foreign car to be a ricer.

For those of you that don't understand what a 'ricer' is, its when you pointlessly spend tons of money to make your car look like crap.

    Examples:

    Foreign Rice

    Domestic Rice

The cars right up there ^....yeah, those are the ones I don't like to see. However, I'd jump at the chance to drive one.

They are called "rice burners" becuz the history of these cars began w/ Asians(especially the Japanese) who started modifying their Civics, Sentras, etc. Get it? Asians = rice...burners = nitrous oxide(or any upgrade which made the car go faster) and wala, you get: rice burners!:D

Also: ricers = Asians, BUT somehow SirCharlesFan kinda didn't realize that.....;)

I live across the street from the Kmart on Westhiemer. THey still hang out. When I get home at 2 or so on Sturday nights, I park in my parking lot and watchem. It's cool, but I like American cars. I'm a Harley and Dodge/GM/Ford type guy.

Don't know if you remember about a month ago when they busted those people out on Britmore. It was on the news. I was out there. It sucked. Swat swooped in and blocked off the streets for a square mile. I was sitting in a line to go through the baracade when I looked at the bushes next to me. I thought,"I think the tollway feeder is on the other side of those bushes". As I got out to look, the first car went "over the wall" and I followed. People were clowning my big dodge truck when I got there, but when I was home sleeping by 2 am, no one was laughing. I had a friend go to jail for racing that night. Since then, I stick to watching on westhiemer from my parking lot.

Rice Rockets are gay ( I say this and I own one). If you want to race, keep it on the track. I'm tired of the peckard kidds racing their vehicles on westheimer. I can't even drive down westheimer anymore in a normal manner without some punk kid revving his car next to mine.

Just bc I have a 02 RSX Type S, doesn't mean I want to race you. Ever think that since you hear my system going off, I am just enjoying the tunes and driving down westheimer? This is never the case.

Anyhow, these kids in Houston are mostly wannabes. It's too bad the influence of HPD to crack down on their ways has not discouraged them.

I hate rice rockets with a passion. Lucky for me I live in Austin and dont have to endure the wrath of the Westeimer racing strip.

The thing I want to know is can these cars really out-drag a Mustang Cobra or a Camaro SS or Corvette. I dig the real american muscle, but is it more power than speed?

I think instead of calling these cars rice racers and rice rockets, and rice NASA, and rice mobiles, and rice paper patty, how about calling them Import cars that can go. I don't call Mustangs and Camaros corn fed, or wheat fed, or organically grown corn, or potato driven mustangs.

I think there are very few import cars that have "muscles."
A Honda Civic is a freaking sedan. A Horse Snake car is a sports car thingie.

I think the only Import car that can out drag an American Muscle would be Honda/Acura's NSX. Or whenever Toyota is suppose to put out a car like that.

I'm not educated on Mustangs Cobras, but isn't that a V8 car?
because the NSX is only V6.

The simple answer to your question is "no," or at least "not usually." Its easy to find power, and most Japanese stuff is well-made enough to handle huge shots of nitrous, and they are usually light-weight enough so that the smaller engine = less weight = equals better power/performance ratio. But your question is really comparing two different styles of racing -- American racing has traditionally been about 1/4 mile times and handling is usually thrown out the window in favor of more seat-of-the-pants, straight-line racing. The Euros and the Ricers emphasis is a LOT more on handling and real-world driving than it is on straight-line performance. However, American auto makers have made great strides in the last 10 years concerning handling. Still though, with the light-to-light racing that takes place on the streets, my money is on the American muscle.

For me, I don't give a damn about 1/4 mile times. I love taking corners way too much for that, as my all-around Bilstein's will testify too. I love hanging with ricers and Euros (and Vette's) in the turns, because a 1993 5.0 Mustang wasn't exactly known for handling.....ah, good times, good times.

The new NSX is 24-valve DOHC VTEC V6 - with 2 versions.

    the 3.0L - 252 hp (automatic)
    the 3.2L - 290 hp (5 speed)

The car cost 90,000 dollars to go 4.9 0-60 and 13.4 1/4 mile. My 31,000$ Camaro SS does the quarter in the mid 13's and 0-60 in the low-low 5's and you still have 60 grand left over. I would take a Z06 Vette/Camaro SS/2003 Cobra anyday over a NSX...

    http://www.supercarsite.net/nsx.htm

I wouldn't bet on an NSX against american muscle either, I beat one not too long ago and I am pretty much stock (335hp) besides a K&N Airfilter until my warranty runs out. :)

All the big american muscle comes from a V-8 camaros/firebirds corvettes/cobras/trans ams. Sure the NSX is only a V-6 but it is a tweaked V-6 pushing 290hp, more than a Mustang GT. If you put 60 grand into a mustang/camaro you would kill an NSX and just about anything else on the road. If I had 90,000 to spend it would be on a Dodge Viper.

On your first point, does it really matter? I mean there are stock import cars that could destroy Stangs and SS's. There are Stangs and SS's that could destroy imports. What the hell is the point to all this? I dunno. I mean, I can buy a car, then replace just about everything in it and call it a faster car... lol.

But to answer your first question, I could tell you about the 1000-1300 horsepower Veilside Nissan Skyline that does 0-60 in under 3 seconds. I'm sure Lynus' rearview mirror would be blown off by that... :).

Personally, I think both groups are dorky. One likes to sit on top of rumbling thunder... the other group likes to sit in something that sounds like a wind-up toy... they both go fast, but who cares? Get something like a Hennessey Venom Viper, a McLaren F1, a Ferarri F60, or a Lamborghini Murcielago. At least those can turn some heads... everytime I see these souped up Stangs and Civics, I try my best not to laugh.

As for me... I'm content with my under $30k Japanese imports... :)
