I heart Yao Ming

 

I have a feeling that this interview was all cooked up by the reporter. I read the interview in Chinese, it is full of bullsh*t, Yao Ming was arrogant like an ass during the interview IMO. As pointed out by several fans on sina.com, this interview never happened and the reporter made a fool of himself by writing up something like this. The funny thing is from this interview, Yao Ming has an obvious accent of northern Chinese even though he was born and raised in Shanghai. In case you don't know, the source of this interview is "Sports Weekly", a newspaper "famous" for its imagined interview with some players. This kind of faked interview happened at least once during the World Cup period.

 

No disrespect for wind&sea, but here is why I feel this interview has never happened.

#1. Ming's northern accent (Beijing accent to be exact) throughout the whole interview.

#2. Ming mentioned a 15/10 performance against Shaq. As you might not know, rebounding has never been emphasized (at least not enough) in China's basket systems. As a result, players don't pay much attention to rebound, defense rebound in particular (they might go for offense rebound so that they can tip in). If you have watched Zhizhi playing in NBA, you will notice that. As good as Ming is, he is a product of that system. So I don't expect him to mention a double double performance. I believe in a Chinese baskeball player's eyes, 20 points is better than 10/10.

#3. Ming's familarity with NBA players. I recall reading a piece of report saying that Ming does not follow NBA that closely. But in this interview, he somehow gave an analysis of all his oppornents and he even mentioned the "white chocolate" which wind&sea doesn't know. That, to me, is a little fishy.

#4. The track record of that "Sports Weekly", enough said.

A final note regarding Ming. I think he has fallen one step behind in his preparation for NBA among all rookies by not attending the summer league. He will fall another step behind for not being able to attend the full training camp. This is not a good sign to me. Based on my past experience as a foreign graduate student studying in USA, the first step is very important for a foreigner to succeed in the USA. Considering Ming's committment to his national team duties, he probably will miss most of the summer league/training camps in the future. This will definitely affect his development in NBA. As much as I like Ming, I feel this is unfair to the Rockets. I don't know how you guys look at this.

 

Ming has shown that he is capable of being cocky with comments about Chandler. He has to be cocky in the NBA or he will end up like Terrance Morris. He needs to think he can score and rebound on anyone.

 

Thanks shrimpie for mentioning the track record of Sports Weekly. I checked some details in the interview and I found one point to be quite suspicious.

These words are from Yao in the interview:

If Yao really said it, apart from being quite arrogant, it means he was invited to Carter's basketball promotion activity in Beijing held by Nike on July 24th, and furthermore, he'll have the chance to play against Carter and wants to stuff him. I checked other articles regarding Carter's trip in China. They did not mention anything about Yao being invited, nor is there any competitive activity with Carter involved as a player in the relevant events.

There's absolutely no mentioning of Yao Ming in these articles. It's not possible if Yao's been invited. Beside, the purpose of Carter's trip is to promote basketball in China. I don't think Yao would be mean enough to want to disrupt it. Adding the arrogant remarks Yao made, this article do smell of fishyness. Now I wouldn't trust it unless otherwise proved.

There is no doubt in my mind the interview never happens. A lot of sports journalists in China are extremely irresponsible. I remember there was a story on Yang Chen's girl friend. Yang Chen is a soccer player playing in Germany. The journalist claimed he interviewed Yang Chen. The next day, another journalist said the first report is totally untrue and presented the true story. But in the end, it turned out both of the journalists are liars.

 

I don't know if Sports Weekly is a Chinese newspaper/magazine, but if it is, did it ever occur to you all that the Chinese Communistic government did a little tweeking with what Yao said to make him look like a "true" representative of China???

I really hope he didn't make those comments because he's going to get everyone in the NBA making it their personal goals to embarrass Ming on the court.

If he really is that smart and this statement is true and unaltered through the lens of the communistic government, this could be one of the stupidest things Yao could have done for himself.

 

I think it is premature to compare Yao with Shaq or Duncan, either by Yao himself or by the clueless reporters. Any starting center or power forward in NBA can teach Yao a lesson right now. If Yao can play better than Shawn Bradley and Raef Lafrentz, I will be exemely happy.
