On 7/18 I had one year of sobriety. I know this is mostly a drinking board, but this is a big deal for me, and I wanted to share it.

The last year has been awsome. Next weekend about 20 friends and I are going to the beach to celebrate. Party time, sober style.

By far the best decision of my life. My life is not perfect, but it's pretty darn good.

    Congatulations!!!!!

As someone who has seen firsthand how hard it is to rescue yourself from this deadly disease, I commend you.

Colby, I am so glad you shared that with us.

My dad has been sober since mid 1998, and life has been much better for my family.

The worst of times for my dad were from 1993 to mid-1998, and as a son, it was tough to deal with.

Honestly, the Rockets success during that time period helped ease the pain. It is like a balancing act. Dealing with my dad's drinking problem was frustrating and got me angry at times , but the Rockets winning championhips during the same time was just unbelieavable, and as result, life was just awesome to me anyway.................but........

....in early 1998, i said to my mom that I would prefer that my dad be completely sober and the rockets be pathetic, than the way it is now.

Turns out that is how it has turned out, and i am not complaining one bit. My dad is spritually connected, and I never have to worry anymore.

That being said, the Rockets better make the freaking playoffs next year. My dad is in a new era and so are the Rockets.

I am glad to hear that. Luckily I am single and didn't have to hurt alot of people around me. It is great to live a spiritual life now. I don't live in a mission and pray all day, but I do have a new purpose in life.

For anyone that reads this and thinks they might have a problem with alcohol or know someone that does, you don't have to drink. Millions of people worldwide have recovered from Alcoholism and live very happy and joyous lives.

I thought my life would be boring being sober, but it's just the opposite. I have many new friends that are real friends and care about me. If I had know sobriety would be so wonderful, I would have done it years ago, but, can't change the past.

Thanks all for the kind words.

colby: Have you ever seen the movie "My Name is Bill W."

It's the story of the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous-- with James Woods, James Garner, and Gary Sinise.

It is a greatly inspiring movie. You might like it.

Yea, I have seen it. It cracks me up that Ed Wood is Bill W. It's a good movie, but as someone familiar with AA, I don't feel it does it justice. It's like the old saying, the movie is never as good as the book.

I wish they had concentrated more on the wonders of the recovery and where AA is today.

None the less, it is a good movie.

    Congratulations Colby,

I know what a struggle it can be. I'm working on a year and a half.

I've wondered why we now have those annoying the truth commercials whose purpose is to inform the youth about the dangers of smoking. Why in every alcohol commercial are there bikini clad women and life is a party? Alcohol will kill you just as dead.
