I just felt Abu Dhabi cringe and grit its teeth... :)

    Incredible structure nonetheless.

Holy crap. 1/2 a mile tall and elevators going faster than our city street speed limit. That's just mind-boggling.

While the building blows me away, I just don't see how Dubai can support having it. The population is around 1.7 million, a small fraction of whom are citizens. Heck, the population of the entire U.A.E. is a bit over 8 million, with less than 22% nationals. To fill this building, and the many, many other buildings already there or being built, in Dubai and the rest of the UAE, requires a huge influx of outsiders with a bunch of money, not the workers who can't live in these edifices.

I can think of many countries where this building could have been constructed and viable, but here? Guess we'll see.

It's split between retail, commercial, residential and hotel. Lots of restaurants as well. Many many floors are not for sale and will be given to government entities.

One more thing is that tons of people from Abu Dhabi are moving to Dubai but keeping their jobs in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, etc.. Renting in Abu Dhabi is ridiculously expensive and supply is still not close to meeting demand.

Regardless, these things are not made to create profit. It was always planned as a landmark with profits being a secondary goal. If it breaks even, then it is a terriffic investment already.

    On that....

The Numbers: (cont'd.): 1 Big beacon for terrorists to target, right in their own backyard.

That's amazing the Burj is already turning a profit. I figured with Dubai's real estate market on the verge of collapse they wouldn't be able to get anywhere near full occupancy on that tower.

Cool. Another skyscraper for me to go visit. I would like to visit most if not all of the skyscrapers that were on the "tallest" list.

That's what I was thinking. Spectacular building. It's going to hurt when the building eventually gets knocked down.

    Lol. Sensitive much?

Or how about this? You ever notice the proximity of Dubai to places like Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen? If you're that sensitive to my comment, I'm assuming you have....

Not sure I understand what you think they have to gain over knocking down a new crown jewel of the middle east.

I think there's some creative accounting behind that claim.

It would suck if you worked on the top floor, then go out to your car only to realize you left your car keys up there.
