The New York Knicks supposedly have some interest in the Houston Rockets' Tracy McGrady(notes) but the Rockets aren't planning breaking any speed records to trade the expensive star who is on indefinite leave from the team, according to the New York Post.

The Knicks would love to make the playoffs this season, just to show a little progress from the previous couple of horrendous seasons, but losing to the New Jersey Nets like they did last night isn't going to help their chances. But the Knicks are apparently not going to snag McGrady just yet.

The Rockets are apparently planning to talk to a whole bunch of teams. And all that talking could end up for naught if no teams offer anything the Rockets want. The team would then buy out McGrady and he could sign on with a team as a free agent.

The Knicks and Rockets have reportedly had "limited" conversations about a McGrady deal. Extensive talks with any trading partners will happen more next week once the holidays are fully over.

The trade is too complicated because right now only teams that are playing in the 2010 Sweepstakes want him. Like an article said, nobody wants Tmac the player just Tmac the contract and only teams involved in the 2010 sweepstakes would want him. So those are teams like the Nets, Clippers, Bulls, Knicks, etc. The trade is a lot easier say than done.

I don't think it is n the Rockets best interest to not let someone who is healthy to play, then after agreeing to make a trade to take their time.

If deal doesn't happen in the next few weeks we need to buy him out and let him leave.

A buy out is more likely than a trade being done. We will not get a great deal when teams no Tracy is done. Letting that be known public made it so much harder for us to get a good deal.

can someone educate me? Why would we buy out T-Mac if no one wants him?

The buy-out comment is interesting. Depending on how strongly McGrady wants out, the Rockets could hold him hostage for a low buy-out price.

This also confused me..I thought it was clear that we would not buy out McGrady under any circumstances...

The Wizards wanted him. Others teams are interested. It isn't that teams do not want him, but regardless if we are not suing him, just buy him out. It can't cost any more than paying him for the year. Let him go and part ways. End it all as soon as possible.

I understand that, and agree completely with you. But I still dont understand why we would do that for HIM.

If we do the buyout, do we lose the benefit of the expiring contract?

If no deal is made after the trade deadline, because no other team offers anything remotely beneficial, the Rockets can either (1) sit McGrady down for the rest of season and keep him on their books, or (2) reach a buyout in which McGrady gives up a part of his salary so he can go sign with another team.

If McGrady is indeed willing to give up some money, option (2) would make more sense than option (1), since the Rockets were not going to play him anyway and option (2) allows the team to save some money (probably in terms of both salary and luxury tax)

Of course, all this assumes that the Rockets don't find anything beneficial between now and the February deadline. My guess is a trade will happen.

I don't think we are planning to buy him out, regardless of the situation. He either can rot all year not playing a single game, or he can go on another team and prove to fans how good he still is. I doubt we can make it the Allen Iverson situation.

Well if the trade deadline passes and no takers then we could just buy him out, let him walk and still have his money to use. I know there is a deadlne for him to sign with a team after a buyout and still be able to play, i'd imagine Rox would wait after that deadline. Someone please correct me if I am wrong on the deadline thing.

For one we are a Basketball Club which is bigger than playing immature play ground games. We wants out, we obviously do not want him, so if we can't get a deal, buy him out and get this saga done already.

if tmac isnt traded he might become a huge distraction if he's shelved for the rest of the season.

it would be in the rockets best interest (in that situation) to buy him out AFTER it is too late for him to sign with a playoff team.

a buyout might also get the rockets under the LT.

I agree with this. It should be on The organizations terms, not for the sake of T-Mac. we owe him nothing.

I agree because any game that T-MAC does not play is paid for by the insurance. So why do him the favor?

Insurance is not paying anything at this point. It stopped the moment he stepped on the floor

Well I'm sure insurance only covers games missed by injury.

Also it isn't about doing him a favor. I would be disappointing in this club if they were playing childish games like that.
