According to Leach, they never asked him to apologize.

No I don't think BU "lets him go." If he leaves, I don't see them hiring Leach.

Detention there are other kids in there with you, you aren't allowed to talk, get up, get something to drink when you want, so I guess I do see the difference.

This is about as ugly as any coaching situation I've seen. The Chancellor on the firing:

"I'm very sad to say there's only one person to blame for this and it's Mike Leach," Texas Tech chancellor Kent Hance told the AP.

    Leach:

"Texas Tech's decision to deal in lies and fabricate a story which led to my firing includes, but is not limited by, the animosity remaining from last year's contract negotiations. I will not tolerate such retaliatory action. Additionally, we will pursue all available legal remedies," Leach said in the statement

    A current player:

Wide receiver Tramain Swindall said he supported the decision to fire Leach. "I do agree and I'm supporting Adam and what he's doing because it's the right thing to do," Swindall told the AP in a telephone interview.

    The defensive coordinator:

McNeill said he was shocked when he learned of the firing -- and he lobbied to be Leach's permanent replacement.

"I'm very interested in the job," he said. "I think that's a double yes, with some exclamation marks."

There's apparently no loyalty on the part of anyone. The last is the most amusing to me. Not 24 hours after his boss gets fired, the guy is already gunning for his job.

Well, for one thing, he's still under the employ of TTU.

So it's not like he's going to say "Hey **** you, Boss. I'm with Mikey!"

Plus its not like Leach is going to magically become the HC again... Ruffin is doing what anyone would do, some people were already floating his name as a replacement last year when Leach leaving rumors were flying.

Certainly, I understand him feeling that way. But he could at least be tactful and say something like "the situation is unfortunate, we're going to get through the bowl game, and then we'll talk about the future" or something like that.

Presumably, there's some split in the lockerroom over the firing. If nothing else, it probably doesn't help you get the support of the players that like Leach when you publicly say "hell yeah, I want his job - with exclamation marks!" while half the team is still pissed off about the situation.

The quotes taken out of context do look a little harsh, but I'm guessing it isn't as bad as it appears on paper.

Ok, so is there any confirmation on whether the kid was locked in a closet or media room? If it's the media room then this is truly some BS....

There was a link earlier in this thread to a report from a Lubbock TV station that shows Leach's attorney showing them where James was confined. It was essentially a one car garage (complete with garage door) where they keep the tackling dummies, etc. The attorney kept pointing out that it was "not a shed," and made a big deal out of the fact that there is an ice machine in it.

The attorney admitted during the news report that James was kept there for close to two hours.

Are there worse places? Yes. Would I want to stay in there for a couple of hours against my will? No.

Essentially, the attorney admitted Leach's guilt on the 10:00 news in Lubbock.

Looks like the NYTimes published a story with these paragraphs in it... and then took them out later...

(This was the link to the story the passage was in originally: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/31/sports/ncaafootball/31leach.html?_r=1&hpw )

One thing I do like about Leach is that he doesn't give a crap about how he comes off in public. If anyone's going to take on the incestuous ESPN fiefdom, it might as well be Leach.

Eh - is it really guilt? He admitted to doing it from the start. The question is whether it's wrong. Coaches punish players all the time - is having someone stand in a garage for 2 hours worse than having them run sprints in 100 degree heat, or all the other things coaches do as punishment? Those are done against people's will too - that's why it's punishment.

Now, if he did it because the guy wasn't practicing due to a concussion, that's a problem. But if he did it because of the guy's attitude or whatever, I really don't see the problem, unless we're saying all coaches in the NCAA should be fired. And I don't think he should be apologizing for it in that scenario - at that point, the inmates are running the asylum (or, one inmate in particular).

Come on... Putting the kid in timeout should not be a fireable offense but if the kid is hurt and then putting him in timeout then he should be fired...

I heard different stories on if he was cleared to practice or not.
