Cool. Now compare him with Phil Jackson.

RA has a Rudy T style of coaching. if the young players make mistakes, just play through them, and learn from them by not making mistakes in future games. i think alot more rookies would be successful in the nba, if more nba coaches like these existed.

I disagree with that sac team not having a lot of talent, but i do agree RA is a better coach.

Yeah, but he apparently he hates star players, so how's he ever going to win a championship?

It's nice to always talk about "overachieving" but maybe the reason he always has to overachieve is because he always attracts subpar talent.

They're both good coaches, and neither has to be denigrated to talk up the other. JVG took a team to the finals that had no business getting there and instilled a hard work and defensive mentality into the Rockets organzation that continues to this day. Rick has been to a couple of finals and has taken advantage of a competent GM and done a good job of developing young, overlooked talent and overachieved with it.

The Rockets are lucky to have had both coaches for the past 6+ years, because a lot of other teams have done far FAR worse over the same time period.

I would definitely have to disagree with this. Those guys you mentioned, they are talents scouted by DM. The rookies JVG got were Chuck Hayes, Luther Head and Greek Tmac. Aside from Greek Tmac, Luther Head and esp. Chuck Hayes were really good contributors to the team. Its unfair to JVG because you don't know what he would have done had he been surrounded by the players DM has, and the players he likes were all weeded out.

A lot of people argue that JVG was all about getting NY washouts and that's correct, but JVG was a coach not a GM. DM would not have allowed those NY washouts to play here again.

    Phil Jackson is very Similar
Except . . .he always has the MOST TALENT PERSON IN THE LEAGUE on his team
Last year was the 1st time I really respected his coaching

Yeah, and obviously dealing with that ego is a big part of coaching, and something that RA is not doing well I right now. I sincerely hope he proves me wrong and really meant all the stuff he said in the last interview, but it seems like he's just jerking T-Mac around for some stupid personal vendettta.

Remember Kobe was a LOT more fed up with the Lakers a few years back than t-mac is right now.

It's not the ego that's the problem, it's the diminished physical skills. The same ego had a productive year for Adelman 2 seasons ago. Ron Artest's ego had two productive runs for Adelman, too.

Who did JVG have to develop? V-Span? Bostjan Nachbar? LMAO. He did give Luther minutes and Chuck Hayes wouldn't be playing here if it wasn't for JVG giving him those minutes. Oh yeah there was one guy that got really good when JVG came, I believe his name was YAO MING or something. You can't say JVG didn't develop anybody. He did great with what he had. Not to mention that JVG didn't have the luxury of Morey. Seriously, go back and compare their teams. The majority of the guys that JVG coached aren't even in the NBA anymore. But he still managed to get 3 out of 4 winning seasons with some atrocious rosters.

I think both are really good, but I'm not sure either can win a ring. Both have strong points and weak points. I think jeff is a micro manager and is a stickler for minor details while rick kinda let it flow. Jeff is more defensive minded and rick is more offensive minded. I think both get the most out of their talent, but as we have seen before, the blazers under rick and the kings shouldve won a ring and didn't. The knicks under jvg were really good also, but they never shouldve made it to the finals.

I agree completely. Too bad we can't put JVG's defense & RA's offense together.

You act like that team didn't have talent. They had miller and artest as all star level players and a still consistent SAR along with bibby.

    PUL LEASE!
Nachbar was seen as having more Upside than Brooks or Landry
and nothing came of it . .. Why? COACHING

See. . it is easy to use hindsight and say . . .well they would have been nothing regardless
    but
that is just not accurate. . . IMO had those guys been with R.A.
THEY WOULD HAVE LEARNED THE GAME THE 'RIGHT WAY'
Rather than been fed to wolves to 'fend for themselves'

JVG was just not a Teach/coach.
He was a micromanager who only wanted to tell you do this or do that
not teach you how to do it.

I always felt JVG became a head coach a bit too soon in his career. He could've benefited from being an assistant coach for a few years more instead of taking the head coach job when Riley left the Knicks. He might have be a more well-rounded coach because of it.

You really have no way of knowing how accurate it is. You are essentially saying Nachbar and Head would have been as good or better than Brooks, Landry and Budinger if coached by RA...and frankly that is impossible to know, and with the facts we have today can only logically be considered a hell of a stretch.

And Angkor has a point...Yao did develop under JVG.

Let's also not forget that RA has a certain guy named Morey working with him as well...

RA is simply a great coach. His legacy as a Rocket's coach has yet to be defined. I say he will leave Houston with atleast 1 championship. That will still give Rudy one more than him...but I think Rudy was merely the best Rocket's coach ever...whereas RA will be known more as one of the greatest coaches of all time because of his accomplishment with the Blazers and Kings.

JVG unfortunately will probably only be remembered as a hot-headed but entertaining coach-turned-analyst.

VSpan coulda been a more turnover prone worse attitude Kyle Lowry type. Basically good enough to be Rafer's backup. Heck it conceivably coulda been Aaron Brooks starting and Spanoulis off the bench right now

I will concede YAO's *Low Post Game* developed
However . . . only in the last couple of years has his facing the basket game
began to return. His passing is getting back to Pre-JVG level.

When he came here . . . YAO was automatic from the elbow and a precision passer
during the JVG era. . . not so much

Under JVG the role players were not as good. But the talent was there bc he had Tmac, and Yao healthy at times during his tenure. Rick has not had both of them healthy for the most part. JVG era role players were not pitbull type players though, our supporting cast was pretty weak back then. You put even a 07-08 Tmac with a healthy Yao on this team, my goodness, we would be stacked.
