My 5 year old personal laptop had slowed to a crawl, and I got a new computer as an early birthday present. It's a great machine, and I'd love to keep it that way. I'd also like to make sure it doesn't pick up any of the viruses that my work laptop picked up (potentially from here). Any suggestions for good virus/anti-malware/other utility software to download to keep my computer going without any problems? It came with Norton and has 47 days left on the trial. What are the best things to add on to keep this think clean and running well? Thanks
cheapest thing to do is check if your Internet provider has a free anti-virus subscription for you. i know that Comcast has McAfee Security Suite for its customers. also, if you are in college or have family that go to school you could ask them to see if the schools website has free antivirus for students, I know that UH has this. if you want to buy, the best antivirus apps in my opinion are ESET NOD32 and Kaspersky. as for malware id just stick with windows defender it does the job well enough.
install and then run this about once a week: ccleaner monitor your startup programs and disable/delete any entries that aren't used frequently.
This. It's free and is a great product. http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/default.aspx Paying for virus scan on a personal PC is a complete waste of money when there are several free options out there that are just as good. The best way to avoid spyware/malware? Don't install BS that you don't need. Don't go to shady websites. Don't click on advertisements. It's really simple. I never get any of that crap. Yeah, I'll probably never get rock hard abs because of my safe browsing habits, but it's something I've learned to accept.
Get rid of Norton. Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Download Super Anti-Spyware Download Avast Free Edition Use Windows Firewall or Zone Alarm All of this is free
If you're using Firefox, I highly suggest using the NoScript Addon. http://noscript.net/ It basically won't allow anything to be executed from any website unless you allow it to. But be warned, it can get a bit annoying at the beginning since you might have to allow the scripts from a website to be permitted before you can browse certain parts of it. However, I haven't had a virus for a few years now since I downloaded this addon. Also, +1 to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. That program has taken care of so many little pesky nuances on my friend's and my other computers.
Anti-Virus- Avast or AntiVir (free edition is sufficient) Anti-Spyware- Super Anti-Spyware Firewall- Zone Alarm or Comodo (I like Comodo more) this should do for security purposes.. I am always downloading torrents and my comp has been safe for a year now with the help of the aforementioned products. you can also add CCleaner to that list. its really good for clearing junk on the PC.
get Comodo firewall (free) and you wont need to bother with all these other anti-spyware programs, unless you are a complete moron that allows every thing.
Honestly ive never messed with Anti Virus stuff, I just stay away from unnecessary downloads and when I do download stuff I tend to stay away from non-secure sites. Also, try to keep p*rn viewing to streaming sites but only in tandem with your ad-block software. Happy hunting.
