Sources confirmed the Sonics discussed unloading Vin Baker and the final four years of his $86 million deal to the Boston Celtics for injured big man Vitaly Potapenko and veteran point guard Kenny Anderson, who is entering the final year of his contract.
Seattle is in dire need of some breathing room to re-sign its two main free agents, unrestricted 22-year-old forward Rashard Lewis and 7-1 center Jerome James. Lewis
seems to be targeted only to return to the Sonics, or if angered by being low-balled, perhaps going home to Houston for a shorter-term deal beginning at the mid-level exception of $4.545 million.

So, with the freed up money from Baker's contract, the Sonics should have enough money to sign Lewis to a wealthy contract he desires and kick us out of the race to get him. I'm pretty sure that some of you are sad while others are ecstatic.

Wouldn't a lot of this depend on Potapenko's and Anderson's contracts? What do they make, and does that really free up enough room for the sonics to resign both guys?

That sounds good for the Sonics but what in the hell are the Celtics thinking about? Vin Baker? That would not help them at all. I thought they were looking at Croshere & Tinsley. That would make them a better team then they are now while this trade would make them a worse team.

Baker & Walker in the game at the same time. Talk about your Fat Frontcourts!

I believe Vin Baker is from the Boston area and has pined to return. So maybe the Celtics are hoping for a happier, more productive Milwaukee-type Vin Baker.

So who would play point guard for the Celtics? Not Antoine Walker?

Note that it says the deal was "discussed." I highly doubt it gets done, mainly on Boston's end, for several reasons:

    1. Boston has no good point guard to backup Kenny Anderson. Forte is not a point guard and neither is Erick Strickland. They need to keep him or get a good PG in return for him because, well, without him - they weren't going anywhere last year.

    2. Boston is very close to the luxury tax right now, if not over it. Their owner has said they cannot go over the $51 million mark in salaries. Why would they deal for a player in Baker who would keep them there for another few years to come?

    3. Potapenko is injured - so why would the Sonics deal for injured goods? Never mind that fact - with Payton around, why deal for another point guard to back him up when said player would only see 15 minutes a game?

Let the Sonics sign Lewis to the max and be regretful later.

Lewis deserves the MAX in Seattle, one less worry about a contending team down the road...don't ask why, just drop the "e" and add "ing"...

There's stories about Vin's depression attributing it to the Seattle weather and his overall lack of confidence of being a ******... Maybe a move to his home with make him a happy ******.

Maybe they could trade Baker to the Blazers for Shawn Kemp.

Baker's a Connecticut native and a real softie at heart. But he really does miss home. He enjoyed Milwalkee because he was around Ray Allen, another Connecticut resident (lives in my town). He used to do Charity games in Hartford with Ray and they actually drew alot NBA stars. I got to see Gary Payton, Scottie Pippen and Alonzo Mourning this way.
But in Seattle, he just lost his will to play. This is the kind of guy i could seriously see improving if he were to go back to New England. Maybe not 20 and 9 anymore, but at least get in shape and show his worth. I really would like see it happen, Baker's been pining for it for years now.
Just my two cents (haven't been here in awhile)

A fellow Connecticut native? What are the odds of that? I'm from West Hartford, or Jim Shea town.

In response to your topic: There are NO rockets (management or players) in pursuit of Lewis. Lewis would hurt our chemistry and cap situation, and I'm convinced that the Rockets would be happiest long-term with a role-player at the 3 (and Lewis does not consider himself a role-player).

LOL ROXRAN! Sattled indeed! Hey Lil, I just saw Sportscenter and they're about to talk about that 3-way deal you talked about. I hope Minnesota gets Stack instead of Spree. Spree showed he can carry an entire team on his back with decent help, look at the Knicks run to the Finals! Spree is a defensive monster, and he and KG would be dominating. I actually hope this deal goes through, I'm not afraid of Stack on the T-Wolves.

Seattle just signed Jerome James to a 3-year deal but terms were not disclosed in the article from NBA.com. Who knows what that means as far as Rashard Lewis' deal?

The trade works if Seattle includes Shammond Williams. But, like several other posters, I can't see why Boston would do it. Anderson's $9+ mill contract expires after this year & would allow Boston to be a major player in free agency next year.

However, if the deal was legit, Seattle would be in need of a starting PF. We just happen to have an extra one. Since it appears that we won't be getting Lewis, I wonder if they would be interested in one of these trade ideas?

Houston sends KT to Seattle for Radmanovic

    or....

Houston sends Taylor/future #1 pick to Seattle for Barry/Radmanovic (not likely)

Rice won't be around after the remaining 2 years of his contract is up & might even get traded in his last year, when he could offer cap relief to a team in need.

By acquiring Radmanovic, the Rockets would be two players deep at 4 of the 5 positions, & if Seattle would go for the second trade, we'd be 2 deep at all 5 positions.

C: Ming/Cato (assuming he really is working hard this off season)
    PF: Griffin/KT (trade #1=Taylor)
    SF: Nachbar/Radmanovic
    SG: Mobley/Barry (trade #1=free agent)
    PG: Francis/Moochie

The only question is, Would Seattle do it?

To be honest, if Seattle pays Lewis the max... that'll be almost as good as him coming here. He's not worth that much, and it only hurts them to pay him thus.
