You're right of course, Bima; thanks for the remind. Sometimes it's easy to forget all of the many ins and outs of trades and signings, salary caps and lux taxes. I know I do at least.
I was pretty impressed with what I saw; at least one really nice assist, some smart placement of self on the court. Those were the sorts of things I was hoping to see from him earlier on...but most definitely better late than never. I suspect we'll be seeing more from him from now on.
11 pages, so I don't know if this has been posted yet. This is from the Memphis newspaper. They didn't want him either cause of his injures. "Griz pass on Wafer; is trade next? The Grizzlies passed on signing free-agent guard Von Wafer on Tuesday because of injuries that the team believed wouldn't allow him to play right away. Wafer, 6-5, was in Memphis on Sunday and Monday and underwent a series of tests that revealed a hip and back injury. The Griz backed off because of Wafer's pre-existing conditions and their interest in a sudden trade proposal, according to team sources. Wafer, however, was expected to sign a deal with his former team, the Houston Rockets. The Florida State alumnus recently agreed to a buyout with a Greek team, Olympiakos. He was expected to join the Griz after receiving a letter of clearance from FIBA. The Griz rejected Wafer after his physical. Wafer last played in the NBA with the Rockets during the 2008-09 season, when he averaged 9.7 points on 44.7 percent shooting. He connected on 39 percent of his 3-point attempts. Wafer told a Houston television station that he paid about $1.2 million to get out of his contract in Greece. "I want to play in the NBA," said Wafer, who boarded a plane from Memphis to Houston on Tuesday night. The Rockets reacquired Wafer because of an ankle injury to rookie forward Chase Budinger." Link
Yeah, you might as well say they need someone like Chris Bosh. It is more likely they could get Bosh than Gasol. Young, cheap and productive centers are not hanging out on the waiver wire. Carry on with your whining.
I don't see where in that it says he passed his physical... All it says is that after he passes his physical he will return to the rockets. The NBA is slower on news and is just re-reporting what Fox reported hours ago. He failed his physical, there is no doubt, because he also failed his physical in Memphis...
Thanks TSlack; I think it actually had, although I must have skipped a page of the thread accidentally because I missed it - up until a moment ago after revisiting some older pages in this thread. I'm not sure how good this looks for Von's future; back injuries are notoriously difficult to heal and stay healed. He might start looking at what his back-up plan for providing for himself will be, if he hasn't already. This could be a career killer, unless he plays for the ABA or CBA (assuming that their physicals are less stringent or they might be excited enough to have a real live former NBA player as a draw that they might "overlook" his injuries).
It is not a career killer, he just needs to get healthy...... Did it kill Tmac's career? Come on, folks.....Von will probably sign here this year in the future, once healthy. DD
This phrase, "and will rejoin the Rockets after passing his team physical" can be read two ways. Apparently, they wrote that assuming that Wafer would pass, and it was just a formality. But, I could also see people reading that to mean that he did pass it.
Dammmmmmmnnnnn, I got so excited yesterday for Wafer's return. I hope they get that situation figured out and sign him later or something. I like Mike Harris' play a lot, but Wafer is far more talented.
