I didn't realize Mike Harris was doing so well (even if it's just the d-league). I also noticed Garrett Temple and Romel Beck are playing fairly well. Whatever happened to Will Conroy? I wouldn't mind him being a Rocket too in the near future.

Let's see, Mike has played with us before... Mike plays for our development team... we need a SF..... Mike is a SF....

Wouldn't of been that surprising, nor would it have taken a Nostradamus to predict that would happen with C-Bud's injury.

IIRC Harris is more of an undersized power forward than a small forward.

He could make up for Landry's absence but we don't need him for Budinger, as the Chron article hints. Instead, McGrady and Taylor will take some of Chase's minutes, and Battier, Ariza and Brooks will make up the rest.

Have a question for ya'll: If Harris continues to get better in D-League, can we sign him to a contract & send Taylor down to develop his game?

You dom in fact, recall correctly from Mike's time at Rice/earlier with the Rockets, but he has definitely expanded his arsenal since then. His handle is much improved (not "good" for a 3, but "passable") and he has expanded his range to the three point line. If you watch the video below (or any of his D league games), it's apparent that he's getting a lot of touches on the perimeter and having a great deal of success going to the hole.

While Mike doesn't have the ideal skill set to play the 3, he is skilled enough to be a supplementary player (he's basically D league lebron right now, which tells me he's good enough to make some things happen against NBA subs). He fits well with our team as a high effort guy who gets cheap baskets by running the court. He would be a plus rebounder at the 3, he would be a useful defender against physical 3s like Carmello, and has the strength to push around skinny 3s (Omri Caspi, martell webster, etc).

At 4, he could spread the court (much like our big australian does now) and also play physically. He might not be big enough to defend bigger 4s who are low-post proficient (Duncan, Dirk, Boozer, Pau etc), but he could make life a living hell for the charmin-soft jump-shooting bigs that populate the league (rashard lewis, barngani, channing frye, etc) with his strength and quickness.

If you can't tell, I'm a fan. He's an ideal deep bench situational player. He'd be a great practice player. He is insurance at multiple positions. I'd take him on our team in less than a heartbeat. Get it done Morey.

Wait, so are they saying Landry isn't going to miss more than 1 game?

At the very least he has better handles than Trevor......and a better 3pt shot now.

This prompted me to do some digging. This is all from an admitedly small sample size (9 games), but mike harris' numbers are, in fact, shockingly impressive:

He's hitting at about 35% from 3 on the year...which would put him 3rd on the rockets (behind brooks and battier).

The stat that really jumps out though: Despite taking 18 shots a game, and very obviously being the first option on RGV (scoring 26 ppg, 3rd most in the D league), he is shooting  57.8% from the field.

I don't care if it is the D league... I don't care if it's a pick up game at the Y...If you are the guy the other team knows is going to shoot the plurality of times down the court, and you still hit damn near 60%...that's seriously impressive.

Also, Mike is averaging 2 turnovers per game. As a point of comparison, Dorsey is averaging 3.7...despite taking less than half as many shots as Harris.

Oh, Mike is also 2nd on the team in rebounds (7.5 per game, 3 of those being offensive boards). Damn impressive.

Thanks Htown57 for the info. I haven't seen any Viper games but looking at the video, he seems to be looking leaner and more mobile.

A few questions though. I'm looking at the Vipers' stats and Harris seems to be playing power forward more than small forward.

    Here's his stats:
    http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/gamelogs.jsp?player=mike_harris

His FG% is impressive but I'm wondering how many of his shots come from layups and dunks. How good is his jump shot?

Plus, how consistent is his 3-point shot? After hitting 5 of 8 on Dec. 8, he's gone 0-10 in his past four games.

Again, I'm not questioning his ability to contribute to the team. I'm just not convinced he is a good substitute for Budinger or the SF rotation.

no, harris isn't a nba player. he should be playing in europe, he could make a lot of money over there, more than the NBDL for sure. he went to rice, he should know that.

Don't we have an open spot on the roster? It'd be nice to pay Harris, he seems like a good dude and a good practice partner/locker guy.

But that really brings up even more worries about Dorsey, that they'd rather sign another person than bring him back to the roster.

If he's fit when teams can sign players to 10 day contracts you can be sure he will get a call up, if not by us then by someone. Harris that is.
