I agree dude, at least JC says every movie he will ever do from now on will be filmed in 3D! So we got that to look forward to, and you know the big directors are gonna jump on his new tech like Katsumi on a big black D.
Saw it today in 3D, visually impressive and immersive experience but like a lot of people have said the story and characters are pretty 1 dimensional and predictable. Not a terrible thing, the movie is still a pretty impressive.
Sure, the story wasn't very original, but the execution was there, and overall it was just a pleasure to watch. Really glad I got to see it in 3D.
Does anyone have any quotes or links or actors, directors, other celebs who saw the movie and what they thought? I already read somewhere Jon Favreau(Iron Man director/actor) or however you spell it stood up at the end of the premiere and yelled that Cameron is the greatest director ever.
Also, S. Weaver was said to have been crying at the end of the movie. (although she's in it....so grain of salt...)
Saw it last night at the Marquee IMAX in 3D. WOW, what a spectacle! I can honestly say I have never seen a movie like that before. The technology was just amazing! The story was average but the execution was pretty good. Needless to say, the final battle scene was ! Overall a very good movie largely in part to the tech. Action movies just cannot be the same after seeing something like this though!
This movie was awesome! I didn't think it was gonna be that good for some reason but it blew me away!
I saw it for the second time today. Went to Edwards and all IMAX shows were completely sold out, so we had to see it in 3D on a normal screen. That was pretty packed itself...a good sign I hope. Now either I was used to it or the normal screen 3D is just not comparable...I'm thinking it's the latter. I dunno what exactly causes a difference but things didn't quite pull out as well as they did on IMAX. In any case, the film was even better the second time. I enjoyed the story much more, the climactic scenes were even more emotional and intense and I was able to notice things that I hadn't seen before...there's just so much detail here. And this might be considered ludicrous...but dare I say that Zoe Saldana's performance is every bit as good as any performance I've seen this year from a female actress. And it took in 27 million on opening day...third highest opening day for a December release.
I struggled with this for a while after watching this movie. I'm naturally cynical to anything that the masses cling to. The story really isn't especially moving, but its not terrible (Xmen? spiderman 3). Basically Dances With Wolves meets Fern Gully. Two actors stood out to me as TERRIBLE tho, the corporate douchebag and the nerdy scientist guy. But... The visual effects were off the wall crazy. I felt like I was watching a next gen video game (I mean that in a good way, like Uncharted 2 for PS3) everything was so sharp and bright, but not super glossy like most CGI effects. I've never seen a movie like that. And considering the story that he had to work with I do think that James Cameron did a good job of minimizing the cheese factor and making me care about what was going to happen. Great story? - eh.. Great movie? - ABSOLUTELY **I don't know the name of the main actor, but he was the same guy in Terminator 4. I like him as the next big action/scifi star. He can actually act. I hope to see more of him in the future.
Sam Worthington, he'll topline the Clash of the Titans remake coming out in March. I actually thought he was pretty unimpressive in Avatar, Zoe was much better doing voice work.
I know this may seem nit picky...but I think it deserves mention that the actors didn't just supply voices to this film. Every movement, every facial expression is their own. Which is why I think Zoe Saldana should be recognized for her work; she owned that role. Anyways, it's pretty cool to see how they actually did it. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/P2_vB7zx_SQ&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/P2_vB7zx_SQ&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Yep, games have been doing this for years......we just don't have the horsepower to render everything in real time....... DD
Avatar took in 73 million domestically and 232 million worldwide. Combine that with an overwhelmingly positive word of mouth, it should be a success. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34469240/ns/entertainment-movies/
I was skeptical at first on what it would bring in, but like you said as word of mouth gets around on this I think we may see some Titanic type numbers.
I just saw this movie today and I gotta say, it was amazing in some areas, and extremely lacking in others. Obviously, JC is a great director and did great things on the screen through CG, effects, camera angles, and etc. That aspect of movie deserves to win awards. The creation of Pandora, its creatures, fight scenes, and individual characters were all amazing and looked as realistic as could be (including the great battle scenes). But, the acting and story leaves much to be desired. I don't know if this was done intentionally since the movie was already 3 hours long, but I just didn't feel the struggles the characters had to go through. For instance, Jake's choices in the end (don't want to ruin it for anyone) didn't scream out to me like someone who had to make a tough decision - it was too generically done like in a lot of B-type movies. The acting and story, in my humble opinion, did not come near that in District 9 (which does an amazing job of portraying the human condition as it struggles to make difficult choices in a harsh environment). However, I can look past this due to what they accomplished technically. Overall, great movie. It will no doubt become a financial success and generate sequels as JC mentioned.
