Please watch the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela get enthusiastic ovations from the Copenhagen delegates as he quotes Karl Marx.

"We could say that there is a ghost lurking. To paraphrase Karl Marx there is a ghost running through the streets of Copenhagen. And I think that ghost is silent, somewhere in this room, amongst us. Coming through the corridors and underneath. And that ghost is a terrible ghost and nobody wants to name him or her. It’s capitalism. Capitalism is that ghost. Nobody I don’t think wants to name it. Capitalism. I’ve also been struck by some of the signs outside this conference. One sign in particular that reads, “Don’t change the climate … change the system!” I particularly liked that one and would add to that by saying that by changing the system, we could save the planet. The destructive model of capitalism is eradicating life."

There are some things in life that should not be based on profit motives.

Healthcare and stewardship of the planet are a couple of them.

    mc mark,

I am for healthcare reform but its pretty ridiculous to tell a guy who spent 8 years in school trying to get to a certain point and another several years of training that he/she shouldn't try to earn a profit.

I hope that's not what you mean

No one is saying someone can't earn a living as a doctor but last time I read the Hippocratic Oath, there was nothing about exploiting people for profit.

And I was speaking mainly to insurance companies and corporations that put profit over healthcare.

    its all good,

but I don't think doctors exploit people. I think there are plenty of problems but i have no problem with doctor salaries. we could reduce standards so we could have more doctors, but I think that wouldn't put a dent in the costs.

I know right? Doctors should be able to make as much as they can but damn those insurance companies that bridge the funding gap between what you can afford and what your doctor wants to charge you!

Great post. That is exactly right.

Anything that is "single-payer" is a monopoly, and it is not capitalism.

Pure Capitalism does not work, and there are no pure capitalism anyway. But Capitalism mixed with social safety net and regulations is what makes things go.

this thread is a pretty awesome microcosm of why the republican party is in tatters.

an OP with little purpose or meaning, lots of rhetoric, plenty of bitterness, no ideas or solutions, etc.

but as far as i understand, the US is the only country in which doctors' salaries are exorbitantly higher than the national average (please correct me if i'm wrong here)

If you took the opposite view of this cartoon, concentrating wealth and over exploiting resources, has led to disaster to quite a few civilizations and societies.

But how do you prevent them in an unregulated market?
