Should Rudy be canned if we don't make the playoffs?

Background: I'm a big fan of Rudy and CD as talent evaluators and general managers. They have restocked the Rox with a tremendous amount of talent in a ridiculously short period of time. I generally respect Rudy as a coach. His strength is keeping the guys happy and keeping team chemistry. I'm not sure he rises above average in the X's and O's or in teaching. I think it's more likely than not that the Rox take the 6, 7 or 8th seed this year.

Two questions: If the Rox fail to make the playoffs . . . that means that we got beat by three of the following teams: Portland, Seattle, Minnesota, LAC and Phoe. (SA, Dallas, Utah, LA and SAC will should be better.)

Assuming that the Rockets were reasonably healthy (no injuries beyond the ordinary course), assuming that Rudy does a reasonable (but unspectacular job) of developing Ming and Griffin this year . . .

    1. Should Rudy be replaced?
    2. Will Rudy be replaced?
    3. If so, by whom?

Under these assumptions, I think Rudy should, but will not be replaced. Rudy and CD have to deal with the curse of the potential that they created, a la Mack Brown. (warning, gratuitous Hook'em Horns.)

But Rudy is too popular in Houston, and Alexander won't want to shake things up with Ming and the new arena coming. Also, Rudy is known internationally, which is good for Les' bottom line.

Id only replace Rudy if we could get a Larry Brown caliber of coach, which might not be that far fetched if the 76ers dump Iverson and go the rebuilding route.

    This should be fun . . . .

With this being such a young team with 2 foreign players in their first year, I'd give Rudy a free pass this year. If it spills over to next year, then I think we've got some firing to do.

I don't know if we must reach the playoffs.

What I will be looking for more than W's and L's, is effort for 82 games, as well as whether or not the Rockets have improved upon last year's biggest weaknesses, no defense, and a very poor iso-style offense. If the Rockets revert to last year's bad habits, and the young players do not improve, then without a doubt, fire Rudy.

Basically, I am looking for improvement, not necessarily playoffs. Obviously, improvement isn't as concrete as making the playoffs.

Nope. A lot of factors go into firing a coach.

Depends on the circumstances. If the Rockets have another 2001, in which everything goes well but the West is extremely tough... no problem.

If next season is as bad as last season, and there are few injuries. Then I think Rudy needs to go.

From what I understand from our informants (;)), Rudy is in no danger regardless of record this year. The year after... his position could get dicey without improvement.

I think C.D should retire and Rudy should move into C.Ds spot as GM. Let's face it how many time last year did Rudy fail to draw up a play in the final seconds of a game that made since, hell any body can tell Cat or Moochie to dribble the ball until it's two seconds on the clock and throw up some crap.

I say the entire team should be gutted if we don't make the playoffs...

I seem to recall someone saying RUDYwill step down himself before he is fired.I believe he will move into CD's job, and I believe he has earned at least 1 or more years with MING on board.I think his negotiations over in China will land him our GM spot to keep Ming's representatives comfortable. I think if we didn't get MING he would be gone after this year if the team sucked.

NO WAY should Rudy get fired after this year. He has done an incredible job of putting together a team of talented youngsters.

The team loves Rudy, and Rudy has already proven he can win in the playoffs. Rudy deserves at least 3 years to prove what he can do with Ming, Griffin, and SF.

I like Rudy too, but let's face it. 4 years without playoffs? I dunno if the fans will like that. I know he needs a few years for some of these guys but I just wonder if everyone's willing to give Rudy that chance.

Man, I'm hungering for the playoffs...oh well, at least we have those two championships.

Rudy is safe this year with all this young talent needing time to mature and the move to the new arena right around the corner... but if we don't see considerable improvement over the next two years he may be forced into a front office position. Rudy is a Rocket for life and I don't think he will ever be "Canned" but may at some point step aside.

I don't want Rudy canned, playoffs or not. But as to whether he should be canned, I'll defer to kidrock8's wise response (I didn't think I'd ever live to see this day... ;) ):

I agree with kidrock's response, but W's and L's are still important to me. A tightly contested playoff race and no playoffs is fine, but this seems to be, by all indications, a very talented team now. It should be healthy this year (if not, Keith Jones needs to be promoted for his other skills or let go) and it should be good. At the end of the season I want to be able to say, whether they make the playoffs or not, that the Rockets were decent or even good. Not just that they improved (which is also important), but that they are really really close to being something special. Even if it isn't Rudy's fault, if I don't feel good about the season when its done, I think a fresh face needs to be brought in. Who? It is very premature to speculate on that, but if it did happen, I could tell you that I don't want any college coach and I don't want Calvin Murphy:D

If the Rocket's don't win enough games to make the playoffs, he should be fired. This assumes the rockets are relatively healthy.

Nope, He stays on. Who out there is better than him? You also have to give Yao at least one year.

Rudy should be canned if we don't see some innovative offensive schemes ran. And no, the "flex" is not innovative. I'm expecting to see something similar to Sacramento's offense, but it doesn't have to be something amazing, just progressive.

Can him. Any coach willing to trade a first round pick for Terrance Morris ought to be taken out back and shot.

Yep, I think so. I gave Rudy the benefit of the doubt last year because of the injury's but Honestly I am not that impressed with his coaching. Yes he is a players coach but thats not always good. Players like him because he is one of the fella's, but being a coach you cant always be that way. Way to many times our players made constant mistakes in which the player should have been pulled or chestised (in my opinion) but Rudy being the players coach that he is, let it ride. Sometimes you have to let players know that even though he is laid back, he is still the coach. I love Rudy he is a great man but if the team doesnt win this year I think the players will give up on him. No intentionally but mentally ya know. If he doesnt show a serious progression offensively and if his players dont start to make better decision's I would like to see Rudy step down into a office/gm type roll and let someone else give it a shot. I dont think anyone within the organization can do it either. We have too many Ego's on this team so its going to have to be someone with status. Personally, although I hate the Jazz I have much respect For their coach Mr. Sloan. in my opinion last year he should not have been competitive but with a new crop of players other than Stockton and Malone of course he made his team work. Look at Donyell Marshall he was lost until he went to the Jazz. I think he is a hell of a coach. DONT GET ME TWISTED I HATE THE JAZZ! But I must admit they have a hell of a coach

This year: With all the changes and young talent...he gets a free pass this year....if the team improves :)

This year: if the team does not make the playoffs and the team outlook looks bleak, bounce him

Next year: if no playoffs then bounce him :(
