I need to replace my battery terminal. The negative terminal is cracked and sometimes its touching enough of the battery to start, sometimes it doesn't. I see you can buy pieces like pictured below, but how do you hook it to all the wires?
strip the wire. some will have a screw clamp to clamp the bare wire to. some you will just crimp the tube where the bare wire goes. ask the dudes at autozone if you are not sure what kind you are buying.
Yeah, usually they are crimped onto the negative cable and you can go to autozone and the after market one's usually have a bolt on type not the crimped type that comes from factory. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/accessories/accProductDetails.jsp?displayName=BatteryTerminalEndandAdapter&itemId=427-10&navValue=100427&parentId=2032-10&productId=95964&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=95964_0_0_&filterByKeyWord=batteryterminal&categoryNValue=102032&store=3986&skuDisplayName=2pcs.epoxytoppostbatteryterminal&categoryDisplayName=StartingandCharging&_requestid=268508
I'd just buy new cables altogether, if I were you as the corrosion can run up into the wire itself. You can buy them in a kit (pos and neg terminals and cables), it's not expensive, and it's less work than splicing a new terminal onto an existing cable which again might also be corroded. Edit: A new cable, with terminal, is ~$7 (had to put in the info for my car, but it ought to be in the same price range) so you could replace both for somewhere around $20 with, again, less work than splicing.
