Why is it that when we have yao, chuck doesnt even take of his jump suite. I mean they didnt even let him relieve, they would rather have a 40 year old mutumbo because of his defense. I dont really under stand this but when we are without yao all of a sudden chuck is our man. dont get me wrong chuck is a real good player he didnt get this good over night either. It seems like hes a red headed step child that only gets played with when the others arent around. chuck is a good player im and gives us alot of oppurtunites with his fast hands and post d. im just hoping next year he stays part of the rotation or we give hima chance to go elsewere and not rot on the bench he is there for us when we need him, and he is 2 good a guy to let rot on the bench so we can sign a 40 year old center to take his minutes.

well maybe chuck is a liability in offense at least Motumbo can score and defend at the same time?

I hope the OP remembers Chuck was our starting PF until Scola got here.
And really, Chuck is a PF playing center for now. Deke was a no brainer at the time and with that particular lineup.
Obiously now Chuck has made his case as a solid backup at the 5, if and when Yao returns.

Chuck has always been good on defense, but I think he's improved over the last year or two. I think Chuck will continue to see playing time when Yao comes back. He's earned it.

As good as Hayes is, it's hard to give him many minutes with Yao starting. Is he a good pair with Yao compared to Scola and Landry?

Next year though, it's pretty clear that Hayes is the answer at backup center. There's no need to pursue another one.

Chuck generally has more trouble guarding someone that is more mobile and can shoot from the outside. His defense is evolved around strategic positioning and force his opponent out of their comfort zone. This works best with centers like Shaq or Oden, who cannot score from 5-6 feet out. When he's guarding someone that can shoot face up from 15-18 feet, he is not as effective, as his only defense other than positioning is to swipe at the ball before they shoot. And there are more pfs that can shoot really well from the outside than Cs. He still plays good defense on the shooting 4s, just not as great as when he's guarding low post centers.

Hmm...then why does he own LaMarcus Aldridge so bad? In the playoff series last year we would basically give him Landry's minutes because Portland went into a huge funk when he was out there.

Chuck is fantastic in every facet of the defensive game, he's even getting used to guarding wings now (see Monta Ellis at the end of the GSW game). Dikembe however was better in every facet of the offensive game except for passing and the catch-and-shoot. Yes he had a better jump shot. Have you seen Chuck Hayes' free throw? Jump shots and free throws aren't the same thing but they certainly aren't independent variables either.

My guess would be that LA is not strong enough and does not have excellent body control. If he is bumped a little bit when he is taking the jump shot, he tend to miss. And that's a strategy Hayes often use, a little bump when someone is trying to just shoot over him. When we were playing the Wolves earlier this season, in the first half Hayes was destroyed by Al Jefferson. My theory is that Al Jefferson is stronger and can absorb the contact and still make the shot.

Besides, LA did not do all that terrible the whole series when Hayes was on him. Maybe some of our resident stats guys can chip in? I'm not saying Hayes can't guard shooting 4s, I'm saying he is less efficient in guarding them compared to conventional centers. Hayes probably eat a good chunk into Aldridge's shooting percentage, maybe from 50% to 40%, but not as significant as making Oden or Shaq going from 60% to 25% or less.

With an injury prone Yao, Chuck will see more minutes.

It's great to see the guy playing well but he has some serious flaws on offense. The guy is built more like a 10-15 minute player who can play defense and be valuable in transition offenses with passes and cuts to the basket. The Rockets still need a starting center this season.
