for you guys who say Suh had the most dominant performance they've ever seen, do any of you guys remember what Warren Sapp did to Nebraska's vaunted offensive line in the Orange Bowl in 95? Miami eventually lost the game but Sapp had a world of a game against a better line.
Not a good argument IMO. The same could be said about almost any Heisman winner. Where would Reggie Bush be without Leinart/White? Where would Leinart be without Bush/White? Where would Tebow be without Harvin? Where would Jason White have been without Peterson? I understand the thought process but I don't think you can take someone out of the running just because of that. Also, guys it is "Suh" and not "Sue."
To be honest, no. I didn't really start watching college football until I was a teenager (around 2000) so I didn't see that. I don't doubt there have been better performances than Suh's, and it wouldn't surprise me that a beast like Sapp would have one of them, but personally Suh's was the best I've seen in about 10 years of watching college football.
All good points that I am aware of. Its hard to argue. But I genuinely feel, this year especially, Shipley plays too large of a role to give it to McCoy over other more valuable players.
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2009/12/07/heisman-trophy-toby-gerharts-a-finalists/ It’s official. Toby Gerhart is headed to New York. He’s one of five finalists for the Heisman, along with Texas QB Colt McCoy, Florida QB Tim Tebow, Alabama TB Mark Ingram and Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh. No surprises there. The Heisman can invite as many players as it wants and makes the determination based on voting. This year, the race is wide open — especially after McCoy struggled against Nebraska. The presentation is Saturday evening at the Nokia Theatre at Times Square. I think Suh’s the best player but has little chance because of his position. The question, it seems, is whether McCoy and Ingram split the first-place votes. If that’s the case, then maybe Gerhart earns enough second-place votes to sneak past them. It’s hard to envision him winning the award on the strength of first-place votes given that Stanford lost four games and he was largely an unknown commodity to many voters until the middle of the season.
Leaving C.J. Spiller out was damn near criminal. How did Tim Tebow get an invite to NYC? He wasn't even the best QB in his own conference. Another marketing tactic to hype up the ceremony on ESPN, and attract more fans to watching the presentation. We'll be seeing non-stop commercials and ads on ESPN with images of 'The Chosen One' for the next week or so. Spiller, who was the ACC POY, was arguably the most electrifying back in the country. He was a home-run threat on kick-offs, punt returns, hand-offs, and out of the backfield in the passing game. In one game this season Spiller actually caught a TD, threw a TD, and ran for a TD. He had 230 yards rushing and 4 TDs in the conference championship game. Props on a stellar senior campaign, Spiller.
You do realize that the people are invited based on the vote totals, not by who ESPN just randomly picks, right?
Not many RBs that finish the regular season with 912 yards rushing and are held to 18 yards rushing and 19 yards receiving versus their rival will get Heisman consideration. To Spiller's credit, he did have a return TD in the first quarter of that game.
Seriously, forget about Spiller. His numbers are not outstanding. Look at Toby Gerhart. What really is criminal is that he is not a favorite for the Heisman. 1736 rushing yards, 26 rushing TDs.
Oh, really? C.J. Spiller: 201 Carries, 1145 yards, (5.7ypc) 11 TDs Rushing 33 rec. 445 yards, 4 TDs Receiving 13 ret, 210 Yards, 1 TD punt return 22 ret, 708 yards, 4 TD kickoff return....and 1 passing TD Toby Gerhart 311 carries, 1736yds (5.6), 26 TDs 10 rec. 149yds receiving, 1 passing TD Mark Ingram 249 carries, 1542yards, 15 TD 32 rec, 347 yards, 3 TD receiving I'm not discrediting what Gerhart or Ingram have accomplished this season, but please get your facts straight before you downplay Spiller's phenomenal senior campaign. I don't necessarily think he should win the Heisman trophy, but he was definitely deserving of an invite to NYC.
Well, it's clear that they don't randomly pick the candidates, but you do realize that a number of the voters are actually employed by ESPN. Heisman voters employed by ESPN: Skip Bayless, Steve Bisheff, Todd Blackledge, Jack Arute, Beano Cook, Lee Corso, Ed Cunningham, Rece Davis, Bruce Feldman, Pat Forde, Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Ivan Maisel, Mark May, Brent Musberger, Woody Paige, Brad Nessler, J.B. Morris, Adam Rittenberg, John Saunders, Joe Schad, Michelle Tafoya, Mike Tirico. They realized C.J. Spiller didn't have a legitimate shot to win the Heisman, so why not add a former Heisman winner and 2-time National Champion to the ceremony...
Ingram will win it. It was Colt's to lose and IMO he lost it. I don't think Gerhart will win it because of Stanford's overall record. Tebow and Suh are out for sure. Suh played really well against UT, but it's so rare when a Defensive player wins the Heisman. Ingram, rushing for 113 yards, 76 reception yards and three TD's against Florida's defense should push him past Colt
From the stats you posted... that's further proof of how beastly Gerhart really was this year and how the race shouldn't even be close. Spiller's numbers and Ingram's for that matter don't come anywhere close to Gerhart's. If you're complaining about Spiller being left out then I'm sure a whole bunch of other players would have a gripe about no invite. I don't think Spiller's even the best RB left out. I'd take this guy over Spiller... Jacquizz Rodgers 255 carries 1,377 yards rushing 20 td's 74 rec 509 yards 1 TD receiving
I have no problem with either Suh or Gerhart winning it but no way Ingram deserves it. Ingram could not even gain 100 yards in five separate games this year including the no show against Auburn where he only rushed about 30 yards on 1.5 yards per carry average. He clearly does not deserve it but he probably has the best chance to win do to SEC Bias. Suh will not win it because he is not an offensive player and the voters will just not give a defensive player enough votes. He was the most dominating player this year however and I don't think anyone could make a good argument against him if he won. Colt had a good enough season to deserve it especially with the game against A&M which was the best individual performance in the NCAA this season. Unfortunately for colt his last game was not best and that is what voters will look at, not the whole season. Gerhart had a great year and probably has the best chance to win after Ingram because he really was good.
