[Short Film] Kanye West / Spike Jonze - We Were Once A Fairytale

don't care to search for it, but i posted a thread about this, i think, 2-3 months ago when it came out. the timing was awesome, actually, as he posted it on his blog about a week after the Taylor Swift incident - even though, as you may be able to tell from his long(er) hair, he filmed it sometime in the first part of the year.

This is definitely true, but I watched the whole video and I have to say it was pretty interesting. Much credit to Spike Jonze, however, just about any celebrity could have taken Kanye's place here.

To me, the message is that everyone, no matter how successful or loved, has an ugly side...something that, from within, takes control at times and makes us someone we never intend to be. For a lot of people, that "something" takes over when they drink. I think Kanye puking was symbolic of his breaking point, and in a way it offered him some clarity and relief (like puking will often do when you're wasted). In that moment he came to the conclusion that he had to do away with the monster inside him before he went spiraling out of control. What follows is quite a literal representation of that.

As for the "monster inside him" slicing itself to death...I think maybe that symbolizes that Kanye finally had some form of control over it, or perhaps it serves to solidify that the separation was a permanent, conscious, and committed act. I'm not entirely certain.

 

Interesting. I had a different take, actually. I took the little creature he pulled out of himself to be all the good inside him (since it was fluffy and kind of cute). The little creature killing itself wasn't him gaining control of his problem, but giving into it and throwing away all that was good inside him. I suppose it could be interpreted either way and maybe I'm biased since I don't really like him as a person (love his muscial output, though).
