Taken 30 minutes ago in Mo City...already more on top of this...mo city is in the bulls eye right now. <embed src="http://img266.imageshack.us/slideshow/smilplayer.swf" width="426" height="320" name="smilplayer" id="smilplayer" bgcolor="FFFFFF" menu="false" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" flashvars="id=img266/snowdeck.jpg"/>
But the ice can, especially in a city thats used to tropical weather. We also have a further commute then most cities. Things can get dangerous. I can understand parents who have to cancel because their kids are being sent home early.
I'm guessing you're the kinda guy who woke up this morning and immediately updated your Facebook status to read something like, "SNOW!!! OMG!!!!1111111111 LULZ!"
this isn't Minnesota. People don't get trained how to drive around a large city in a snow storm. It's like asking people in LA to drive through a flood watch.
I came to work here in downtown Houston but didn't see a lot of snow. Now I walk out to the parking lot and my car is completely frozen. It stopped snowing, though. Spoiler
A snow flurry does not = ice. Cities as crazy far north as the frozen tundra of Dallas have the same commutes... There's no reason for anyone to be sent home, it's just plain stupid. Nothing is even remotely iced over yet -and that's not even a definite for later. Not to mention the city, county & state are spraying everything over. It's nice to watch snow coming down and it is cool to see it once a year or so here but for feck's sake, it's not a life altering event nor something that should immediately make Houston drivers' IQs drop 50 points immediately when it starts.
Overpasses and such should be a little slippery. The freeways are already messed up enough as it is on a regular day in the afternoon. Never underestimate how stupid people can become. Anyway, what does it matter to you that people get sent home early? If a company wants to make sure their employees are safe then its their right. It does not affect or harm you in any manner.
Anyway, it's coming down like crazy on Allen Parkway, but not sticking. They are talking about sending us home at 11, but I can't go anywhere because of a gig right down the street tonight. The wife just called and said Spring ISD is closing at 11 as well. I have to be driving from River Oaks to Kingwood tonight after midnight. Should be an interesting drive......
It's snowing A LOT. It was snowing so much, it created a slippery slope of snow... some kid was in SKIs following me... he finally reached me at my office and stood outside... Spoiler
We need more ice days in the D/FW area. Every year...we get a few ice days with some problem spots on freeways. But, we haven't gotten a really good icing in several years. I'm talking about ice which is like a half inch thick on roads...where you can't even pull your car out of your driveway without sliding. But, any sign of ice and D/FW does tend to go into "safe" mode overstating the problem. People still drive terrible when it snows with no ice. I was dealing with that on Wednesday. Everyone was driving like they were about to slide out. I was hauling butt yelling at all the idiots to get out of the way.
