This team has some good to great talent, is fairly young, and can win. They are knocking on the door of the playoffs and have an owner that wants to win. And Houston isn't too shabby of a place to live either. All the ingredients to draw a solid, top-name coach here.

I'd say the only question is money then.

I highly doubt Kubiak will be fired at the end of the season, unless they really stink it up the last five games. But if he is not brought back for some reason, I think Cowher would be a good fit.

McNair is a money man and would be willing to pay him whatever he wants and would also give him total control of the personnel decisions needed to build the team into a legit winnner.

    Welcome to Texans Guys!

Don't worry about our media, they will love you guys and it would take a string of bad choke jobs for them to start asking you tough questions.

So no worries we're just happy to have an NFL team :(

I don't get the Shannahan talk. What does he bring to the table that Kubiak doesn't?

Why does anyone want gruden when he personally ran tamp into the ground? After taking over for dungy and even with the superbowl, he was under .500 or right at in tampa.

Gruden as a color commentator does not come across as head coach material.

Gruden did a great job in Tampa. he arrived to a team that was about to be in cap hell. Sure enough, they went in to cap hell and all the players that made that team great were either old or signing somewhere else. They never got him a good QB, though they tried and he did everything to make the QB situation work.

Looking at the record is a poor way to judge how effective he was considering the situation he was working with.

Should he? I disagree completely. I'd only get rid of Kubiak if a clear upgrade was available. I have no interest in replacing someone who has done a solid job improving the foundation of this team with another coordinator.

Thank you; I wasn't too familiar with Gruden's work in Tampa and I've wondered why everyone was so enamored with him.

Perhaps outside the envelope, but is there a Bill Parcells like coach out there. I just can't see Parcells putting up with the continuing mistakes (especially mental) nor the oft-repeated "its on me" that we hear after every game. He'd snap some necks...

Houston fans have been very accepting and patient... perhaps its time that a drill instructor coach take the reins. Especially one that also excites the fans.
Dungy is a quiet leader, but Cowher and Gruden have some bite in them...

The guy is just so smart on offense. And his type of smart is different than Kubiak type of smart. Kubiak's offensive scheme is great don't get me wrong, but it is what it is. Gruden is creative and attempts new things. He's also fiery. I think that's why people are enamored with him.

I'm actually less sold on Dungy's abilities as a head coach than I am on John Gruden.

That said, Gruden has a lot of baggage, including the fact that he's a jerk to his players. The only way he should be hired for another job is if he's been humbled by what happened in his lockerrom in Tampa.

Uh, you all realize that Cowher is a 3-4 guy, right?

That isn't a good thing when you have a ton of cash invested in a 4-3 defensive end...

This has been debated in many threads.

That said, I totally see why we should avoid switching to a 3-4 to keep our dominant, hall of fame bound, game changing, QB terrorizing defensive end in his comfort zone in our awesome 4-3 defense.

yeah, I agree to an extent...and Cowher is (IMHO) the best coach not coaching right now, but revamping a defense can take years...I would hate to rebuild when I feel like we are a few pieces (and a coach) away from being a legit contender.

I'm not anti-cowher...just wanted to point that fact out to all of the people saying he is the perfect fit for our team

EDIT: and it appears that this has been mentioned numerous times in other threads

i wouldn't fret about losing anything we're getting on the defensive line. we rarely get any consistent pressure and i think we're next to last in the league in sacks.

i've said before in other threads, i think we look at rebuilding efforts as being monumental tasks because of what we saw the last time around....but that's not the case now. there aren't holes all over the place with this team.

    Agreed.

Not sure if I would've said that a year ago.

How hard would it really be to switch to a 3-4 though? Any harder than it is to get this 4-3 defensive to be good up front? I mean if you think about it, our defensive line is basically a non-factor right now. So we switch to a 3-4 and we can't rush the passer next year while we try to get players, are we any worse off?

For this defensive line to get better I think they need at least one defensive tackle and probably a new defensive end that can rush from the other side. To run a 3-4 we need what, two OLBs and a DT? Can Cushing play OLB in a 3-4? If we had the players right now to run a good 4-3 I could see the argument, but since we don't, I'm not that hesitant to make a switch.
