With all due respect, that makes absolutely no sense. The Heisman is an award to honor the most outstanding college football player in a given season. That's all it is. How he plays relative to the prior season - what does that have to do with anything? The competition was much stronger a season ago. It's the same principle as games themselves. Sometimes you can play your absolute best and still get beat, because your opponent was that good. Other times you can play mediocre and win because your opponent wasn't that good. It would be an absolute travesty to eliminate Colt from an award for the most outstanding player of 2009 based on something that has nothing to do with the 2009 season.
If ever there was a year when a defensive player should be a Heisman finalist, it's this year. And that player should be Jerry Hughes. He's the second choice in my book. But Colt McCoy should win it. I really don't think anyone else is close.
Jacquizz Rodgers still getting no love despite being one game away from leading his team to a Rose Bowl. He really delivered in that Stanford game.
I'm not a UT fan - graduated from Tech, so I certainly don't want Colt to win the Heisman. I just don't see anyone else taking it. I think Gerhardt needs to get a lot more love, but I think he'll fall up short. He ran up ND's as-es last night for 200+ yards.. it was not fun. The point was more, Texas Tech quarterbacks get penalized for the amount they pass and running a "gimmicky" offense. I see a lot of comparisons in that argument against Tech to be used against UH. I've honestly not even seen the Cougars play this year. I just think it's hard to get into the Heisman talk based solely on stats when your offense throws that much - it sucks, I know.. welcome to the life of a Tex Tech fan. If losses didn't count, I'd be pimping the sh-t out of Clausen - he had a damn good year, highlighted by his 5 TD performance last night. But as moes will always be quick to point out, he had two elite WRs and we've never beaten a ranked team either. Either way, I think it's safe to say that this year's heisman race was kind of a let down - unless you're a Longhorn I guess.
Its going to Colt, especially after UT started playing like one of the best teams in the past few weeks. He's played very well over the last few weeks, and he's had an excellent career. The award has evolved into the MVP of the best teams, and Colt fits the bill. That being said, I wish that Case Keenum would get the invite to NY. I never expected him to win it this year, and I thought it would be a stretch to get to NY regardless, and I think that the UCF loss knocked him out of the invite. I hope he still gets it though.
These conference championship games have been "final impressions" for previous Heisman winners. Maybe Case will earn himself a trip to NYC with a great performance in the C-USA title game. He'll have a TV audience again to prove his case. I think it's been a while since they've been on National TV.
No one really stand out this year, IMHO... Colt, Timmy, maybe Toby...It would be nice for Case to get an invite but I don't think he will...
I expect Nebraska's defense to give Texas' offense trouble, and Colt's numbers will be extremely pedestrian. Between Ingram/Tebow, the winner of this game I think will win the award if he contributes significantly to the game. I don't mind personally if Colt finishes 2nd. Just like VY in 2005. Heisman curse is legit.
I'm a huge McCoy fan, but Suh is the best football player in college this year. The guy is just a beast.
I'm a huge McCoy fan and would love for him to win it, but if Suh or Gerhart (or maybe even Ingram) win it I wouldn't be too upset. Suh is absolutely the most dominant player I have ever personally watched at any position. He plays DT better than Ingram or Gerhart play RB and better than Colt and Tebow play QB. He probably won't win because of his position, but man... he's the best player in the nation. Gerhart obviously has the stats to win, and he seems like a nice guy from a good school, so no hard feelings there. Ingram is a little puzzling, because his stats really aren't up there with those of past RB's (Jamaal Charles had very similar stats two years ago and didn't get even a mention of heisman) and he's a sophomore. There used to be a big stigma with sophomores winning the award, but I guess Tebow erased that. That being said, he definitely is a stud and there have been less deserving winners in the past for sure. All I ask is no Tebow. Dear lord... please no Tebow.
That's actually a really good list and pretty accurate IMO. Gerhart should win it. Too say he was beastly this year is an understatement. Close second should be SUH. Very distant 3rd and 4th should be Ingrim and McCoy by default cause they led their teams to nice records.
Sue & McClain should at least be at the ceremony. McClain has been coordinating that defense on the field like a pro.
I personally think McCoy's performance in the Big 12 title game is being blown out of proportion Out of all the candidates, what one team would be where they are now without that player? That said, Suh is the best football player in the country and deserves to win the award...at the very least, he deserves to be in New York for the ceremony.
Where would McCoy be without Shipley? Shipley is the best skill player on that offense therefore McCoy doesn't deserve to win IMO.
Agreed - I don't think he can win it, but it would be awesome. I would go with Sue, then Gerhart, then Colt, then Ingram if I had to rank the top 4.
Actually, I'd probably put Colt and Ingram at a tie. Colt had the better season, but Ingram did more against the better teams, while Colt really didn't.
The candidates in NYC should be Mark Ingram, Ndamukong Suh, C.J. Spiller, Colt McCoy, and Toby Gerhart. It was McCoy's trophy to lose before the weekend, and it appears as if he did just that. Nebraska has one of the stingiest Ds in the nation this season, so many voter may take that in to consideration. They have to consider his entire body of work. Suh's deserving of serious consideration - he leads the #9 total defense and #2 scoring defense in the nation in tackles and sacks. He's the most gifted DT prospect of the last 25 years. Gerhart and Spiller have very impressive statistics, but the fact that they're not going to be playing in Pasadena on January 7th will diminish their accomplishments in comparison to McCoy and Ingram. Gerhart is a punishing back, and he's racked up 26 TDs to carry the Stanford team on his back this season. Spiller's the most dynamic back in the nation, and he's an all-purpose yardage machine. He recently broke the NCAA record for career TDs on kickoff returns with 7. But, after saying all of that, Mark Ingram's going to win the 2009-10 Heisman Trophy. He's the best player on the best team in the nation, and he definitely out-played McCoy on Saturday.
It all depends on the voter's criteria (obviously). But historically it has been given to the best player on the best team(s), if you're basing it on this criteria, it has to be given to Colt or Ingram. I'm a Longhorn and it could honestly go either way; both guys are deserving IMO. Ingram - Most rushing yards and rushing TDs in the SEC, #1 team in the country. Also had a great game vs. #1 Florida. Colt - Leads FBS in pass efficiency, led Big 12 in total TDs, #2 team in the country. Had a terrible game vs. Nebraska. People who are knocking out Colt because of this game need to realize that Ingram had a terrible game just the week before against Auburn. However, final impressions are HUGE in the Heisman vote so I expect Ingram to get it, but like I said, he is just as deserving of it as anyone else IMO. If the criteria is the best player regardless of their team's record, then you gotta consider Gerhart and Spiller. Suh had an unbelievable game vs. Texas but looking at the season as a whole, I'm not sure you can really consider him, especially compared to Gerhart. Gerhart - 1736 yards, 26 TDs. Not one single fumbe and rushed for over 100 yards in all but 2 games. If team record doesn't matter, Gerhart should win it, no one has put stats close to this. Spiller- 1145 yards, 15 rushing and receiving TDs. This is not including the yards and TDs on special teams. Suh - 26th in tackles in the Big 12, 3rd in sacks in Big 12, 3rd in TFL in Big 12. Like I said, Suh had a ridiculous game vs. Texas, but he was not considered a candidate before Saturday and I don't think one game should put you in the running or take you out.
