I think they need to give the half assist. For example, if a player drives and kicks and the receiver of the pass does not shoot but swings the ball to the shooter, that should be a half assist. The play was caused by the guy who originally kicked the ball out.
And you can even add the AstReb, a la Shane Battier tipping it to a teammate to recover the ball, and AstAst, aka the pass leading to the pass. What about "open jump shot passed up for a less efficient scoring attempt"? This seems to happen at least 5-10 times a game and is extremely frustrating when you see it happen, with Scola, Ariza, Budinger, and Lowry being the primary culprits. They should all learn to be black holes like David Andersen!
defense It wouldn't be one stat but rather a number of stats mirroring those that are used on the offensive end (well, we can leave out free throw defense). I think people generally seem to dislike individual defensive stats because they don't tell you exactly how good a player is defensively...but, it's the same way with offense. Someone was arguing with me in the preseason that Andersen and Hayes had a similar impact. I couldn't disagree more and if there were more defensive stats Hayes' individual contributions to stopping opponents would be more clear to others.
Fouls Drawn. That is certainly a stat I like to see as I always wonder who created more fouls for his team, hayes with his charges taken, or kobe with his drives.
I'd like to see the assist stat revised to include when a player sets a screen for another player which results in a basket. For example if Yao set a pick for Brooks and Brooks gets free from his man and makes a jumper, Yao should get an assist for creating the opening. I think it makes sense and I guess it would be more motivation for centers to get out and set picks for guys and encourage team play.
I'm all for more stats to capture the positive interactions that occur between teammates. Unfortunately, a box-score only has so much room.
Maybe one day in the future, they will put tiny homing devices on the players on the court, as well as inside the ball. That way information about their movements on the court could be tracked automatically and then Morey will run some massive computer programs to sort through the data and assemble a team of pure ownage.
I would take away desperation shots, such as the shots at the end of a quarter, from a players game total. Sometimes players don't take those full court heaves just to preserve their stats
The Josh Smith "Dared Three Pointers or Long Jumpers" stat. That would be fun to see how many wide open jumpers a player takes merely because the opponent wants them to.
And the current league leader in charges drawn.... can you guess it... Former Utah Jazz player... Spoiler
I dont know how it would work, but something like open shots made and open shots missed Also I would like forced Turnovers, something like forced fumbles in the NFL.
How about we put a sensor inside the ball so everytime the ball senses the dribbler's hand past halfway down the ball, the ball beeps so refs have to call a carry. I'd like to see this implemented so that there will be no action at all
