Has anyone seen/used this service? I'm not in the target demographic because of my gaggle of children. I'm wondering if people bar-hopping down Washington Ave find a "jitney" (I had to look up the word) service helpful. http://www.39online.com/news/local/kiah-washington-wave-story,0,2317121.story [rquoter]New Jitney Service Targets Washington Ave. Nightlife The Washington Wave is creating a buzz among Washington Avenue nightlifers. HOUSTON - A new Jitney service targets nightlife on Washington Avenue near Downtown Houston. The Washington Wave started making it's first rounds along Washington Avenue from Houston to Westcott weeks ago. Friday, the ribbon was cut on the transportation service. It's the first jitney service in Houston in 15 years. The Washington Wave picks up and drops off anywhere along the 2.8 mile route between the hours of 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. Riders pay $5 for each ride or $8 for an all night pass. The President and Founder of the Washington Wave, Lauren Barrash is a Houston native. Barrash thought up the idea and 18 months ago began her business plan, which included licensing through the City of Houston, and rallying the support of Washington Avenue businesses. If you'd like to catch the attention of a wave runner just wave them down. [/rquoter]
I always thought a service like this could be useful. At the same time, I always wondered what was put in place, legally, for liability reasons (drunks in a fight; vehicular injury). Plus, "drunk buses" similar to this service on various college campuses end up with vomit, piss, trash and overall unruly behavior. Then again, that is college students.
I've ridden it and it is very useful. They charge only $8/night (unlimited rides). They also have a parking lot that is free and does not tow on the weekend, so you can leave your car over night. The bus is a lot of fun - good music, fun people - sometimes we will hang out while the bus makes a few rounds before heading to the next bar. The bus even has barf bags and hand sanitizer for emergency situations. you can follow their updates and get more information on their fb page and website: facebook.com/washingtonwave www.thewashingtonwave.com
I've ridden similar services on college campuses and have never had anyone throw up or get too out of hand.
