finding a job SUCKS. right now i have enough money to get me through a semester or a year of community college. i cant afford to goto college in the first place, but im going to do financial aid and get a butt load of loans like everyone else so i can do it. i dont have a car yet and i want to bust outta my parents house pretty bad. moving out soon is not a choice because im not that dumb! it's way cheaper to stay at home and eat my parents groceries instead of buy my own. my question is: should i get a full time job and just goto college part time for a semester/year so i can save up money to buy a ride and get outta the house sooner or should i just goto school (live with my parents FOREVER) and work part time on the weekends. i just want to hurry up and get college over with
Goto school (live with my parents FOREVER) and work part time on the weekends. Trust me, take advantage while you can. If you take the other road It'll take much longer than you think.
What about insurance? Will you be able to afford that as well? Would your parents be willing/able to pitch in? Tough choices. You might want to consider the effect, if any, of working/getting a car on your financial aid. I got through school without a car (until senior year), but that was me and I was able to live on-campus (until senior year). Don't shy away from weighing out all the expenses you can, ahead of time. It's better to deal with them before than after.
DM, I would say go to school full time and work on the weekends living at your parents. I know it sucks, but you said you just want to get school over with, thats the quickest way. If you go to school part time, it will take FOREVER to finish. I have experienced this myself, and it sucks, you feel like your never going to get your damn degree. But thats just my opinion.
I kind of agree with everyone else. If you really do want that ride, maybe you should consider just working full-time and then entering school full-time when you're ready. But then again, that might hurt your financial aid profile.
no no no! soooooo many people have told me that they were planning on going to college, but they didnt start right after they got out of highschool and they ended up never going. i HAVE to start this fall, no doubt. im going to be somebody, baby!
Why work for 5 dollars an hour for a semester/year when you can get maybe $10 per hour had you finished college? Does working for one semester/year to buy a car and live by yourself worths living just one less year with your parents?
I'm glad to hear that. I think you're better off just going to school full-time, but maybe there's more than just two options here. Again, I don't know anything about your parents or your family, but maybe there's a chance they could help you get your car, instead of you trying to do it all yourself.
The way to go is going to college and work at the same time. The best suggestion I can make, is save money NOW. Even if its like $10 a check, it adds up. You just got to make a promise to not take any of it down the line and the pot will get big faster than you think. I will be entering my 3rd year of college in which it will probably take me a total of 5 years to get my degree because I REALLY screwed up my first year. I work about 20 hrs a week and still live with my parents.
You say you want to get out of your parent's house., yet you say you're not dumb enough to give up the free groceries etc. Confused. If you really want to go: Go to the college and find a roomate on the bulletin board. Go ask the people in the office if anyone is looking for roomates. Get close to the college. You can live chepaer than you think. Go visit mom on weekends to do laundry and raid the pantry with a duffel bag. Don't get the car. Take out some loans and get a job at the college. Go for it. It will work out. Many a college student has used their financial aid to get a car. It is cheaper than a loan and you don't need a credit rating! Go for it. Assuming you can get along with your parents, you could move back in once you've finished a year or two if it doesn't work out. I'm sure it will, though. Good luck.
Get a moped. And work part time in college... if you live at home you'll prolly make enough to go out and buy bananas and all that stuff. But definitely do college full time... you'll have more fun that way...
i'd say go to school full time.... i'll be going to school full time.... and living on campus so I suppose I'm getting out of house and going to school full time... then again I also have a car which I can't park on campus first year grr.....
If it weren't for scholarship, I wouldn't be in school full time now. I have loans on top of it too! I personally would do school full time and maybe work part time, but maybe weekends only, just to give you *some cash*. Living with your parents for a while longer won't be the end of the world. You have like 10 years to pay off loans after you graduate. Living on campus without a car isn't all bad. There's lots of people that do have cars that you can hang out with. And bus passes are free for college students (at least at UH). Depending where you go, there's also lots to do right on or near campus that you wouldn't need a car for. Get a bike! Have you seen if you qualified for any grants? My brother has, which is a big help because you don't have to pay them off. The other option would be to work full time and go to night school at a community college for maybe the first year or so. I know of some people who have done it and they recommend it. I'm still not sure though. It's another option at least. Good luck!
