I think the Rockets are being insincere about McGrady

I'm wondering where OP got the detailed information on McGrady's insurance policy?

I agree that they are different, but not 100%.

Both players had significant issues "alignment" issues with management. Both had significant issues coordinating communications with management over injuries. Both had serious differences with management over the nature and severity of injuries. Both players missed significant portions of seasons due to injury leading into the situation in question.

The differences in my mind are that
    1) Mac's injury issues are more likely to affect what remains of his career. They were structural where Hakeem's were not.
    2) Hakeem's religious background gave him a context to develop a sense of humility. I don't know if Tracey has it. That's on Tracey.

Sad thing is that even if mac has an epiphany, I think Morey will move him because that's the only way the numbers make sense.

Are you sure the insurance companies are going to take the Rocket's doctors words for it when they just happen to be the beneficiaries if he continues to sit out. I'm pretty sure that Tracy's doctors and other third party doctors opinions would matter more to them. I have no clue how that insurance policy is written but I would be shocked to find out that the Rocket's doctors are the ones that get to make that final decision based on how unfair and one sided that would be.

with most medical matters there is a lot of gray area. hence the idea of second, third, fourth opinions.

based on the typical timetable for recovery from microfracture surgery, tracy should not be playing. the rockets have that in their back pocket.

if you read up on microfracture, its usually noted that even though the athlete feels better, the area will not be ready for heavy physical activity for months after the pain has subsided.

so, tracy's doctors can come to the team with whatever they want, but the precedent for a 30 year old player coming back from microfracture surgery is set in a manner that supports the stance the team has taken. tracy's doctors would have to prove unconditionally that not only CAN tracy play without risking re-injury, but that he SHOULD play based on their confidence in his ability to heal way ahead of schedule for someone of his age and rehab history.

I say hold him out until he can prove himself in the next full practice next Monday. If coach Adelman sees that he's good to go then thats when you play him. He shouldn't be played just because he's eager to come back. Being eager doesn't mean your ready...

All about the money? That post was horrible, the dude wants to play and compete. He has made enough money, now he has to do work.

I don't know what's going on, but the organization the only ones who lose during this fiasco is the fans. My opinion is that the org is being greedy and hiding details from the fans.

It's about money for both sides. The Rockets are trying to keep the insurance paying McGrady and he is trying to earn money in his next contract. I can see both sides of it. While I like the talent Morey has gotten us, I don't really like the way he has handled players. I'm scared he's going to get a bad rep with players and hurt us getting good free agents in the future. McGrady, who cares, he should just go away.

We all know how coming back early from injury has kept McGrady from serious injury afterwards. Those Rockets are insincere.

Oh wait...How did he get so many serious injuries again?

I think Tracy is a part of the Rockets team so therefore he is in their best interests. To hold this guy out to get sum insurance money seems unfair, especially how they are trying to not make it look like it.
Stop being so anti - Tmac, he plays for the rockets and is being made to sit out when he can play, he is not being allowed to do his job

Doesn't change my theory. The article's wording indicates to me that insurance gets paid for every single game for 41 consecutive games. After the 41st, it can be on and off and each missed game will receive 80%. Before the 41st, only an unbroken streak of 41 will receive compensation.

I'm fairly certain that insurance doesn't pay for each game - it will pay for 41 because a claim cant be made unless 41 consecutive are missed, so why pay per game and then have to take money back if he plays in the 40th?

    Makes no sense.

Fascinating theory Mathloom. I buy it, because of all the reasonable evidence you've pointed out (unlike what the irrational T-Mac bashers spout out).

Lots of drama! All I can do now is sit back and enjoy the popcorn.

To be realistic ,mac is done.there is too much suspicion and mistrust between the organization and him.DM AND RA believe his return will ruin the chemistry ,and will occupy much more time of other young players they want to develop. So best thing is late this year let mac play a few minutes on the court and just let him to prove himself still can play good game and trade him immediately ,his left caree life must be elsewhere.just wish him a good future.

T-Mac ready to play, but Rockets say he'll have to wait

    Posted Nov 20 2009 8:30PM

ATLANTA (AP) -- Tracy McGrady is eager to play. The Houston Rockets say he'll have to wait.

The seven-time All-Star had microfracture surgery on his left knee in February, but insisted that he's fully recovered before Friday night's game against the streaking Atlanta Hawks.

"Right now, I could play," he said.

Not so fast. The Rockets believe McGrady needs more time and would risk hurting his knee again if he comes back too soon. The next step is an MRI on Monday.

"We have a difference of opinion," coach Rick Adelman said. "He wants to play. He's not ready to play. It's as simple as that."

This doesn't seem all that different from Bagwell's situation with the Astros several seasons ago. This is a business people, and both the organization and McGrady are only looking out for their own interests. And frankly I don't think there's anything wrong with the Rockets trying to take a patient and cautious approach to his rehab and return...

He's coming back from major surgery. Wasn't it just a few weeks ago that third party observers saw him limping before the Warriors game? And wasn't it just a few months ago that there was still talk of him returning around the All-Star break, if at all? And yet now all of a sudden McGrady's acting like he's been ready since training camp. Forgive me for being a little skeptical of his word. It's not gonna hurt his chances of a possible comeback one bit if he's activated this coming week instead of this past.
