Kings 109, Rockets 100: The real 'short'coming the Rockets couldn't overcome
    By Jonathan Feigen

The Kings did not intend to taunt the Rockets, but they did.

Hours after the Rockets sent Joey Dorsey to the D-League and Pops Mensah-Bonsu to waivers, making the undersized Rockets even smaller, the Kings destroyed them on the boards for a half. There were tossing things in the general direction of the rim, confident that Jason Thompson would go get them.

Thompson looked like an All-Star, or as Clyde Drexler put it when describing Elvin Hayes in that video with Rick Adelman, "He was a horse - literally!"

(Wow, the Big E had pretty good hands for a guy with hooves. No wonder teams hopped on his back and rode him. OK, I'll stop.)

Somewhere in McAllen, you know Dorsey was thinking he could have gotten some of those boards. There's a lot he can't do, but he can rebound. Pops has never really put up very good rebounding numbers - tipping your own misses doesn't count - but he looks like he should. The Rockets seemed to have pulled the trigger on those moves a bit early.

The problem, however, would not have been solved by Mensah-Bonsu or Dorsey.

Good read, it made lots of sense. I'm hoping DM can pull off something significant.

As if Adelman’s offense isn’t exhausting enough, but having your guards and small forward constantly crash the boards because your team lacks height will eventually take its toll. The Rockets need to get a big body. They will need to make a trade before the end of the season. Unfortunately, that is easier said then done.

Morey needs to make a significant moves or else the demoting of Dorsey and waving Pops makes no sense.

I wouldn't do anything drastic just to get a few extra wins this season... whats the point of revamping when we have both of our all stars out.. The rockets have to maintain their build because Yao is coming back next season and its doesn't get any bigger then that...

Maybe play Andersen more instead of the double power forwards combo

David Andersen is not a rebounder. He averaged 4.1 rebounds per game in the 2008-2009 Euroleague season. Kyle Lowry could probably average that many in the Euroleague.

Though I agree that Andersen isn't a great rebounder, that's a disingenuous way of proving your point. Scola only averaged 5-6 rebounds a game in Euroleague while playing more minutes. Rebounds is one stat that does not directly translate between the two leagues.

Maybe our PF's should learn how to box out?

I mean a guy 6'8" and higher with their size could rebound with better attention to it.

    Rodman was 6'8"....Barkley 6'5", Larry Smith 6'8"

Sometimes it is just about desire....and aggression.

It's the first indication of tanking and having these same expectation year in and year out has got Houston no where.

Well, sometimes size does matter. ;)

Last season we were constantly outrebounding other teams. Now we got a 6'6" guy playing center instead of a 7'6" dude. Desire and aggression don't make up 12 inches in height.

Pushing your man and boxing out does.

and weight (and how much of it is muscle). It's not just about how tall you are.

We know that Pops can contribute immediately with his Rebounding, Interior D-Fence, Post Moves, and Fierce Energy!

Dorsey is similar w/out special post moves, however the D-League should help Joey refine his game especially with his fouls, turnovers, offense, and keep him Fresh.

Unless Pops was a Nuisance, there better be something brewing

Playing Andersen may or may not increase the rebounding on our team but think of it this way. If he is able to keep his defender on the perimeter to guard him, that allows our PFs a heads up for the rebound or at least David can box our his defender easier since he is a bigger player... Playing double PFs just doesn't work very well since they are all undersized

I'm not saying the guy doesn't have talents, but he is a below average rebounder. Watch him play, he gets pushed around easily. In the 2008 Olympics he averaged a whopping 3.5 rpg, which is not very good.

In the 4 losses, they were out-rebounded by 159-199.
In the 5 wins, they barely out-rebounded their opponents 205-199.

    Rebounding is definitely their "short"coming.

Too bad we don't have enough to give New Orleans for Okafor. That would solve the problem, or at least, decently address it.
