Why would others have to give him a crap?

Riiight. Kobe rode Shaq's coattails to 3 rings. Of course, you can't discount the shady Sacramento series and the Fisher game-winner, which took longer than .4 seconds.

Couldn't win squat really after Shaq's departure until a pathetic excuse of a franchise dumped an all-star big man to the Lakers.

With all this being said, I'll agree that Kobe is a great player. He'll go down as one of the all-time greats, but he is not better than MJ.

His jersey is retired in Chicago. That's enough respect for MJ. There were lots of great players before Michael and there will be plenty after Michael, so no need to quit wearing the number.

LOL, out of respect to MJ? What about Dr.J who with out him (and same anology used by James), Michael Jordan himself might not be the same player. Whatever.

lebron is so calculated by marketing machine nike it is sad, everything he does it seems like is image or for an alterior motive, why would he decide mid career no oen should have mj's number, why did he choose it in the first place? to try to take his place, and as popular as he is, everyone knows 23 will always be jordan's number and lebron couldn't take it away so he needs a number when you see that you think of him, bc it makes no sense if he wants to pay homeage to the history of teh game

he just switched his number to the likes of dr j and bill russel to NBA greats, so they don't deserve the same respect or is he going to pull the same crap in a couple years for them? .... this just gets jordan's fanbase in lebron's and adds jeresey sales for a new number, but i do agree it should happen

its not even about what mj did on court, he was arguably one of the greatest on teh court, but he basically was the first international basketball star and made the game an international world game that is today, manu parker all those guys had mj posters and all of them had storires of staying up in the middle of night to catch his game, he changed the it into a billion dollar business and rose awareness of the game to highest charts

Wait isn't the point of wearing the number 23 to honor MJ in the first place?

MJ is the greatest player of all-time and if you say he isn't you clearly never seen him play.

But I guess Lebron says he wants the league to retire his number.

I mean he is the GOAT, but there can be a debate, unlike Wayne Gretzky, who the NHL retired his number, but that is because there will NEVER be a better player then him. If Lebron win's at least 4 championships and like 5 MVP's, he will be considered the best player of all-time

Well,I just don't get it,what's the point of not wearing 23 as his jersey # just in honor of MJ?

And now he wanna have his number switched to #6 then nobody else in this league should wear #23 again? That's just ridiculous.

Players change numbers for selling jerseys. That is the ulterior motive.
