Seems like a supply issue as much as anything else. Then there's the people who imported it months before it came out here.
GOod to see unchharted 2 up there. Well deserved. Borderlands kind of came out of nowhere for me. Have to try it sometime.
don't buy borderlands, save the $65 and rent. IMO, the game is very very linear and becomes boring after a few hours. The storyline is non-existent, no decision making interaction, very little character development, ect. the guns are cool though.
Forza seems to support the idea that racing games aren't very popular anymore. Not looking good for GT5. Supply shouldn't have really been a problem beyond a week or two, and Demon's Souls was released right at the beginning of the reporting period. So I don't think that really affected sales too much. I didn't really expect the game to show up in the top 10 though. I'm hoping it can crack 100K. Sony still can't seem to get "blockbuster" numbers from their games though. What does it take to sell 1M+ in the first month? Uncharted 2 pretty much has it all (and probably so did KZ2 and maybe a few others). Marketing has always been a bit of a weakness, but it seemed like Sony was doing a better job with that (and U2 got 1-2 commercials IIRC, being promoted alongside the $299 PS3). Oh well. U2 did much better than U1, which is great news (especially since U1 was deemed successful I guess). Looking forward to U3. Probably not, unless you really like the idea of getting rid of UMDs.
I found boarderlands pretty fun and entertaining. If you have friends that play it then that makes it more fun.
There are a few reasons, I think. Chief among them: we really can't emphasize enough how bad a start Sony had with the PS3. We are a few years in and *now* the system is both 1)selling well and 2)has good buzz. That's pretty much going to hurt every game the PS3 has up to this point. Though, going forward, after this holiday I think it hurts less and less. But the system is just now gettting it's userbase to the point where it includes the 'mainstream' and masses that push good selling games into the 'blockbuster' level. In addition, usually those games have a good pedigree/history behind them or really good word of mouth or hype. None of the PS3 titles are going to be able to achieve that yet, though that should change going forward. Secondly - and this is of course related to that first point - it's not like Uncharted 1 really was a blockbuster or had huge buzz outside of Internet messageboards. Nothing about Uncharted 1 really created a lot of hype among the mainstream. Personally, I think this changes with Uncharted 2. Playing the game around some of my non-PS3 owning friends and it creates a lot of 'wow' moments. I had almost none of those in Uncharted 1. I think people will see U2 now and it will create a better name for the Uncharted franchise. I expect U3 (whenever that happens) to be much closer to the 'blockbuster' level because of that.
What I don't get is how it seems to be mostly Sony-developed games that seem to have problems creating buzz (at least relative to the quality of the games...somewhat IMO I guess). Bad PS3 buzz would hurt the sales of every PS3 game, but I wouldn't think it would affect Sony-developed games more so. MGS4 sold ~1M its first month (including bundles), and I think GTAIV and MW2 both sold 1M+ (granted, these were all blockbuster games...but then that's kind of the point). Somewhat popular multiplatform games will go for 400K-500K their first month (if not more), nearly on par with what Uncharted 2 just did. And some did it on a smaller userbase (Assassin's Creed, a new IP, did ~400K in 2007) and/or outside of the holiday season (SFIV and RE5 doing ~400K and ~600K earlier this year). Additionally, Uncharted 2 seems to be one of the better opening months for a Sony game. KZ2 opened at ~300k (although near the end of the month outside of the holiday season, in its defense), and I think R2 sold somewhere around the same in November IIRC. Don't even want to touch games like R&C. Is buzz for something like the PS3 version of SFIV really more than something like KZ2 or R2? (Tinman, don't answer that ). As you said, this can be related to other things. But why didn't Uncharted 1 create any buzz? Great graphics, solid single-player campaign, great reviews and praise, great developer, actually got some commercials (although they could have been better...why use CG for a game that looks so good?), etc. All that amounted to was something like <200K IIRC. What separated it from other new IPs that sold better (maybe not 1M+, especially on PS3, but still much better)? I hope so. Assuming they continue to improve the franchise, Uncharted 3 would definitely deserve to be a blockbuster game. That said, I don't really see that much of a difference between it and any number of previous Sony-developed games.
Thats good...I really want it to do well. Its a shame more people havent had the opportunity to play.

Sorry guys...I read up on some more NPD numbers, and this wasn't entirely accurate. Demon's Souls sold over 150K. It was right outside the top 10 (#11, right before Brutal Legend). That's the 2nd highest first month sales for a JRPG this generation (or at least HD JRPGs). Pretty good for a niche game with little to no marketing.
