    Choices weren't as bad as I thought (thought it was going to be something like "Oblivion has amazing graphics!"), although I wished I hadn't used Imageshack at the time. All my pictures/animated gifs are gone. :( It is always nice to read a 3+ year old thread...and read about a game that has yet to be released.

    Anyway, start posting some pretty screenshots, videos, animated GIFs, etc. Console games might end up taking up most of the posts, but we should probably post PC games too (and maybe something other than Crysis too).

    I'll start it off with Uncharted 2:
    (not really spoilers I think, but I'll be using the spoiler tag because of large screens shots, embedded videos, etc.)

    There's a game coming out next year for ps3 called Heavy Rain, it's been in development for more than a year now, and it's being touted as the best looking console game yet.

    Heavy Rain was actually the game I was talking about in the OP. I was skimming through the old thread and noticed I was talking about it 3+ years ago. It was just a tech demo back then though.

    And of course, shortly after I post this thread, I find the NeoGAF Uncharted 2 Photo thread that I had been looking for. :eek: I actually had to resort to taking a screenshot from IGN. :(

    Looks like the game will be centered around the Master Sword as in the girl looks like the Master Sword itself.

    Nothing, and I repeat NOTHING looks as good as Uncharted 2 on consoles. All of the following are pretty much how the game actually looks while playing. No bull shots here:

    Now that Uncharted 2 is already stated, I think there are plenty of other games that look great as well (just not as great as Uncharted 2).

    Killzone 2: Great lighting, textures, effects, and awesome awesome animation.

    Alan Wake (360 exclusive coming next year): Looks amazing all around and could definitely compete for top graphics honors once it comes out.

    I don't really play video games anymore, but like to peruse these threads sometime.

    I will say, even these "best-looking" games, they still look like video games. They definitely look better than anything else, but they still all have that shiny, flat video game look. Is the technology not there yet to make it look more realistic, or is the shiny-flat look just something they think sells the best - it does look more vibrant than real life?

    Some of it is artstyle. Uncharted has a bit of a "cartoony" look to it, so the visuals do look a bit "off" in that regard.

    But largely, it is the technology. CG in movies don't even have this down, and they have render farms producing each frame after several hours IIRC (maybe more, I'm not sure). Games are made on a fraction of the budget, less powerful hardware, and require 30 frames (give or take) to be renderd every second.

    pretty much spot on. a lot of games do special things to make characters/players stand out from the background so they are easier to distinguish. like rim lighting. if done right looks great, typically looks better in video but will always look fake with a still image.

    Insomniac always does a good job with the R&C games, which are also 60 FPS (although doubtful for any future games it seems):

    Clearly, this was just a cleverly disguised thread for posting Uncharted 2 screens.


    I think the popular thing to say is that those are bullshots...just that we get 30 bullshots per second. :)

    Wow. I was thinking it was maybe a few hours per frame, but up to 3 days? Granted, that is for IMAX, but still ridiculous. But it does go to show you exactly what it takes to get realistic looking special effects. Games are great at faking most of it, resulting in something that's still pretty good and actually playable.

    Next-gen stuff should be good. Some of the features popping up in the latest video cards should help out a lot, especially in the hands of developers like Naughty Dog, Guerilla, BioWare, etc.

    Check out this AMD Cinema 2.0 presentation to see where gaming/movie technology is heading. Quite amazing if they can pull this off in a game within the next 2 gens or so.
