There is nothing wrong with that at all my friend, for a month or so that was the staple of my afternoon diet. I use Marantha Organic Peanut Butter from whole foods, and typically whatever all-natural jam I could find there as well.

Nothing wrong with a delicious PB&J supplying you with necessary fats, proteins, and fiber...

Sometimes I throw a banana in mine as well.

Yeah, I was looking at the nutritional content for the breads at Subway recently. I noticed that the white bread and "wheat" bread looked EXACTLY the same. At least that 5-grain bread they have is a little better...and pretty tasty too.

You should try natural peanut butter. The kind without the hydrogenated oils. It took a while to get used to, but now I love it. It just tastes better. And I'm not exactly the type to eat all that organic crap. :)

Yep. all natural peanut butter isn't a tough switch at all if you are putting some sugar free jam on it. Love my pb&j sandwiches now!

Subway has two base breads: White and Wheat.

All the flavors are just seasonings put on frozen dough sticks before they go in for baking. Honey Oat is the only bread I get from there.

Same here, when I do subway I know I'm not exactly getting a nutritional boost, but it is better than binging on a combo meal.

    Great stuff, Donny!

    Okay, let's talk....

I've heard this, and don't doubt it. But I think this discussion is different than other diet/exercise discussions in that a factor of "convenience" has been thrown in. i.e. Making my own oatmeal would certainly be healthier, but a lot more work and expense. And there's a good chance it will taste like ass. What is needed is something that is convenient, affordable, tasty AND healthy.

I'm not gonna say you're wrong about packaged oatmeal being mostly starch and sugar, and not enough protein, but I would think that it would be fine as long as your daily caloric and carb intake was within target ranges. And would be better than not eating breakfast.

Whoa! Strike that... reverse it. Yup, I absolutely meant six whites to one yolk.

Well, again, I would think that canned fruit would be fine as long as daily caloric intake is withing target range. Many of the other snacks you mentioned are either dry and salty (nuts), taste like cardboard (rice chips/crackers)... fruits are tasy, but are also perishable and can't stay in an office indefinitely. Wouldn't crackers be all starch and carbs?

No argument on the sodium. But good luck trying to find chicken or turkey that ISN'T sky high on sodium. If you find that, you let me know. Bread has not much redeeming quality to it, but it brings flavor to the table, especially as toast.

My goal, and (I think) the goal of the OP is to find a great diet for the working man.

    I need convenience.
    I need flavor.
    I need affordability.
    I need healthy.
I need preservability (i.e. keep it stored in my office)

I would think that if I determined a specific goal of how many calories, carbs, and fat grams I need to eat each day, and if the foods I mentioned kept me within that range, I'd be okay (assuming I keep exercising, too). No?

    Food sucks.

If it's storable, it's got too much salt, too many preservatives, or too much garbage in it.

If it's healthy, it costs a fortune, tastes like ass, and/or expires quickly.

If it's affordable, tasty, and healthy, you had to put a LOT of work into making it yourself.

    The working man's quest continues.

Does your office have a fridge? I usually keep my meals there but I also keep ziplocks with protein powder, almonds, tuna, jar of pb, oatmeal, etc in my desk. As long as you plan ahead it should be easy.

Yay. Love these types of threads. Donny covered most of what I was going to say.

The prepackaged oatmeal is the one I want to comment on. It is full of sugar, and eating that alone is a pretty worthless meal. All carbs and sugar. Your body doesn't do well with that type of a combination, especially in the mornings. I do use the pre packaged oatmeal. But I only use one package, then I just mix in some regular plain oats, you know from one of the big jugs you can get anywhere, and add a scoop of proten powder to my mornning oatmeal and 4 cooked egg whites (in olive oil for my healthy fats).

So, mixing in *one* package of the oatmeal is fine as long as you have some other protein to balance it out. Protein slows down the absorption of all those simple carbs and sugar, so it won't be immediately metabolized and wreck your blood sugar and fat storge for the day. Plus, this thread is about fitness/bodybuilding so every one of your meals should have protein, of course except for what you ingest immediately post-workout.

This is typically what I do. Except I've never tried putting olive oil on my egg whites. I'll have to give that a shot.

I generally custom build my protein from True Protein.com. There I can input the exact type of protein with exact type of sweetener or natural sweetener. It is the healthiest and most specific type of protein I have ever found. I am very particular about avoiding artificial sweeteners like Aspartame, Acesulfame K, Splenda, Aspartate, etc.. You can choose from 1 of 7 different type of base proteins and around 30 different flavors. They will custom build the protein and send you them in the mail in big plastic bags.

    1) Wait, so what is the ratio, or gram amounts of carbs/protein/good fats? Is there any other things I should be adding in there?

    2) What carbs should I eat then?

Sigh. Apparently I've been doing this all wrong. I can't believe whole wheat doesn't matter. Bread in general is bad?! And deli meat is bad?! I eat subway sandwiches for lunch every day! :(

It's ok, alot of people get that wrong. I'm sure you could lose weight and trim down eating subway sandwiches (i assume no cheese, Mayo, Bacon or anything like that is added to your sandwich), but if your trying to get a ripped 6 pack and bulging biceps, the only thing really good at subway would be one of their chicken sandwiches.

thanks for the replies on this topic, i just needed some encouragement and to know other people out there are going above and beyond to have a normal work life while sticking to a fitness plan. I took my first step and bought some very low fat peanut butter from Whole foods at lunch, it has only 2 grams of fat per 2 tablespoons. I also got some organic jelly too. I'm going to start stocking that and eating with the 12 grain bread I am eating now. That should give me about 15 grams of protein which is not sufficient but it's better than nothing, once I can condition myself to waking up early enough to cook 5-6 egg whites, I may not need to bread and P&J.

Donny, after all this effort you go to, what can you benchpress? My guess is that I can still show you up in the weight room.
