What were his numbers in Dallas? How Comparible? IF that is the case. . why did TPorter's coaching/system hamper him so? Rocket River
His scoring average has been pretty consistent since his Dallas days. And he has always had high fg% (for a guard) and 3pt%. It's his assist numbers jumped after he got to Phoenix. There is no secret that Nash's assist numbers are inflated by the gunning Suns. But he has always been a great shooter and great play maker. Actually, it is not correct to say that Porter's coaching and Shaq's presence "hampered" Nash. His numbers last year were consistent to his career numbers. It is more accurate to say that Porter and Shaq hampered the TEAM.
Nash is great player, no doubt. However, that run n gun style boosts his numbers. No defense , no championships. Tony Parker and Jason Terry best playoff numbers came while Nash was guarding them. Nash = overrated .
Actually, I agree. I think there needs to be some perspective here, though. When a player moves from one team as a good all-star player to another and becomes a multiple mvp at 30, the response shouldn't be 'OMGZ! Nash iz one of da greatest PG's of all time' It should be 'Nash is a really good player who fits this system perfectly'. I'm sure you've heard the term "system player". Nash is a system player because he has a significant boost in production when in a specific system. As you and many others have alluded to before (in regards to Allen Iverson) a player may not be as good as he looks if his production dips significantly when he changes from a specific system. Shaq actually had his best season in years, statistically. The spread of the offense made it impossible to double him. See, I disagree. Terry Porter wasn't a great coach but the biggest problem wasn't him or Shaq. It was Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire, they quit on their coach. They decided they weren't going to go along with the game plan and it was all downhill from there. They didn't commit to defense and didn't even attempt to play off of Shaq, who was actually having a great year. JVG would die of a heart attack coaching those two. And, Nash's fg% have definitely seen a significant boost from playing in the system. He went from very good (46.5% in 2003, 47% in 2004) to insanely good (50.2 in 2005, 51.2 in 2006). So yeah, it's nice to have a guard who shoots 47% and averages 17 points and 7 assists but that's not an mvp caliber player...oh wait...
Regardless of the change in his individual numbers, I just think Nash is an incredible PG. The main job of a point, as I see it, is to orchestrate the offense and make it as efficient as possible. In his prior 8 seasons, Nash's teams have finished 1st in offensive efficiency 5 times, and 2nd 3 times. That's playing with 3 different coaches, 2 different teams. He took a Phoenix Suns team that was 21st in offensive efficiency, and since he's been at the helm they're perennially one the best offensive teams in the league. To me that's just a testament to just how good he is at what he does. The advanced stats back it up too. Based on Steve Ilardi's adjusted +/-, Nash was the top player in offensive impact last year at +11 (Wade and Lebron were second and third).
Hey fellow Clutchfans members...since I a rookie and can not start threads. I think it would be a great idea to ask everyone on clutchfans to vote on nba.com to get the Rockets on TUESDAY FAN NIGHT. The have the Rockets vs. Suns as a choice for the Tues. Nov 14th game. If we don't get respect from the national media...we can make some noise on their fan night voting. Thanks!
What do Hakeem, Shaq, Dr. J., Big O., and Kobe have in common? They all only have won one MVP award. Steve Nash has two.
We all rave about Brooks (unless he has a bad game... then we rave about Lowry!) and early in the season he was having some stellar assist numbers, but AB doesn't play defense either. You just take the bad with the good, or in Nash's case, the bad with the great. The guy is unreal.
Nash is very good, playing uptempo offense at his age, its great, he doesnt get injured. I bet a lot of players are comfortable and play better in one system.
They've been playing winning ball for years. Now Shaq comes in and they are supposed to change their style to fit Shaq? I don't get it. A low post player who needs the team to feed him the ball in a half court game is called an all time great center. A PG who runs one of the most efficient offenses in a way that maximize not only his skills but also his teammates skills is called a "system" player.
