I've noticed that we have four guys who seem to do nothing but shoot 3 pointers: Ariza, Brooks, Battier and Budinger. I wouldn't fault any of these guys for their shooting if it weren't for the fact that they all play on the same team. 2 maybe 3 guys who do this would seem like the limit for any team - especially championship teams. When these players come off screens or drive when a defender is rotating they don't seem to have the ability to make the 15ft shot. This makes their options simple: come off the screen and shoot a 3 or drive to the basket. I see problems created by this which I will not elaborate on at this time and may never do so. If I were the opposing team I would defend the three, defend the high screen expecting a three, force the PG to shoot if any pick n rolls are called and give up the open mid-range shot to any of the four players in order to get a better rebound.
one star, did u watch the game? budinger has a sweet 15 ft jumper; brook and ariza do drive to the basket; battier play down low sometimes too
first of all, they can each do much more than shoot the three and have been so far this year. second, when yao gets back we are going to be glad to have so many shooters around him. can't have too many good shooters imo
Brooks and Bud are the only guys that drive, they do not only shoot 3s As for Battier and Ariza. They cannot create shots off the dribble, so they are stuck with shooting 3s
that tends too happen when you have ZERO bigs in the middle. We have to shot 3's successfully to win games. If you shoot even 40% from 3, it's like shooting 60% on the floor based on percentages. We have to make the 3' is all.
none of those guys are purely 3 point shooters......and they can all actually shoot well from all over the court, especially brooks and budinger. It's more about their release and shot selection than abilities. Shane's release isn't made to be used when there is no spacing. That's why he's tried pulling the trigger more quickly recently. Same with Trevor, he's shooting much faster than before. Whether it's going to work long term for either of them, who knows. Brooks and Budinger though can both shoot it from anywhere and on the move.
These guys don't only shoot 3s. Battier and Ariza are the only 2 that you could single out and Ariza is a stretch since he has been hitting jumpers and fighting to make plays by getting to the rim. It didn't help that Battier went 1-8 thru the entire game and was 1-6 from the 3 point line. Overall we shot 26% from the line, I'm sure in our wins we have been way more effecient from the line than this game.
Have you considered that Brooks shooting the 3 is the lesser of two evils for the defense? If they defended the 3 pt line, Brooks, having the speed advantage over almost all other pgs, would go right to the basket. At that point, so many things could happen. Other Rockets could cut and slash to the basket for easy points. Or Brooks could get the defensive bigs into foul trouble.
Ignorant thread is ignorant. Chase Budinger purely a 3 point shooter? LOL. Aaron Brooks has no mid range game? More LOL.
You have to admit a slasher would be good right now ... Ala Von Wafer I was hoping Ariza, J. Taylor, maybe even C. Bud would do more slashing... But damn we have nobody on this team that has the balls to attack the rim night and night out. And please don't tell me T-crap will do that.. That dude is a Shooting guard with a Point Guard mentality in a Small forwards body.. Thinking about it now the only person on this team who doesn't shy away from contact is our backup PG Kyle Lowry.
Shoot shoot shoot and shoot some more, if I was RA that's what I'd tell the guys, who cares if the last five didn't go in, keep shooting if you're open.
this is simply wrong. reason why i didn't finish reading your post. sorry. but too eager to start a thread, i guess?
Of the recent NBA champions KG, Pierce, Bryant, Odom, Gasol, Wade, and Duncan did not shoot very many 3's. I remember Orlando making it to the Finals but they did have Pietrus and Lewis knocking down mid-range shots. It creates space the defenders must guard. I hate to say it but at least Alston attempted 2 or 3 solid shots a game to keep defenders honest. Last year Aaron Brooks was shooting midrange but his production fell off midway through the season and he hasn't gone back to it as much. It would make Brooks harder to defend if he brought it back.
That's the thing, we're not a championship team without Yao and tmac/his replacement. All these new threads popping out are trying to fix this team, the one that is active, but that's not really our team. We have no inside guy right, as good as scola and landry can be, they aren't yao, or even close. This means we have to shoot more 3s, when yao returns, we won't shoot as many or depend on it so much, we shouldn't anyway. Defenders aren't worried about staying between our bigs and the basket as they would with Yao. That makes them more likely to step up and contest the midrange area. And to keep a team honest you have to make the shot, taking it isn't enough.
thats right 10 of the 13 shots brooks makes per game are 3's ariza and battier are here to shoot 3's. the rockets have no inside game because of the lack of size. thats why we use this threat outside to create space inside
Rashard Lewis has almost become exclusively a 3pt shooter since joining the Magic. More accurately, his offensive game has completely devolved from where it was his last couple seasons in Seattle. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing. That is the way Orlando runs it's offense with Dwight in the middle. I just thought it was odd to reference Lewis as somebody who doesn't rely on the 3pt shot.
Please dont confuse the whole team with Battier (nothing but spot up three's even if the lane is open)
If I were the opposing coach I wouldn't change a thing, I'd clog the paint so no one could drive and dish out. And let them live and die by the 3 ball, bc just like last night, we can't keep shooting at a 50% clip. So I'll just clog the paint and dare them to shoot bc all of the rox players have to slowest release known to man , so I know that I can get out to the three in time to put a hand in his face. Bc what I don't want is lowry, brooks, or freaking ariza getting into the lane and scoring and getting on fire. Then we have to chase him around every where, instead let him clank a few and watch as he becomes a deer in headlights.
shane is shooting them when he's got space to get closer, but Ariza is forcing them with a man on him...
