I spent alot of time hanging out down there --- also had alot of friends who went to A&M Galveston. Its a cool seen-- lots of parties-- pretty cheap rent (the houses are cool old style) Galveston can get old I never lived there but friends that did got tired of it-- crime is a problem and its pretty dirty in some parts-- its much nicer than it used to be though. You can get into good surf esp. in the spring and fall. A&M Gal. is nothing like College Station (i'm sure you know this) much cooler vibe.

My plan is to end up in College station after a year. If I get a 2.5 I can switch to college station and hope to do so, but Ive heard Galveston is nice for parties.

I have kind of a love/hate relationship with Galveston...

Most people who live down here really take Galveston for granted. They look at pictures of Cancun or Hawaii and they see the pristine, blue water. Then, they look at Galveston and they complain about how much it sucks. I was walking on the beach a couple weeks ago and I thought about this. You know, some people live their entire lives and NEVER get to set foot on a beach and just stare out at the water. Sure, Galveston isn't the prettiest beach and doesn't have the clearest water, but it's a great place to just spend the day and veg out. The Strand is pretty nice. La Kings has the best ice cream ever, and Yagas usually has some good live music. Galveston has lots of "hole in the wall" type places that you have to look for.

Of course, Galveston isn't without it shortcomings. The one way streets, which might have served a purpose back in 1890, are pretty much pointless these days. If you're driving and you see a car careening towards you honking it's horn, you'll know you're going the wrong way. Most of the roads overall are in pretty bad shape, though you should be doing the majority of your driving on the main roads like the Seawall, 61st, and Broadway, which are in pretty good shape. Broadway is a poorly designed street, having no left turn lane. Almost all of the good neighborhoods are packed on the West End of the island, and most of the other stuff would be considered "ghetto".

Don't even THINK about driving on Harborside during or immediately after a big storm. Worst flooding street in the history of ever. Pretty much the entire east end is underwater when there's any significant rainfall.

I agree with everything A-Train said and would like to add that almost every street that runs perpendicular to Broadway will get you to the seawall. A great thing for people who do not know their way around Galveston too well.

One last thing...Dmitiri's and Ocean Cabarets...the finest toothless topless dancers in all of Houston.:D
