Greatness, in all its forms, is nary achieved through coveted ness ambition to possess it, and yet it envelops those few for whom it is a constant state of mind, unknowingly obsessed with.

Greatness cannot be exchanged nor transferred, from one party to another, and yet it perpetually coincides with acts of selfless giving.

Greatness may be defined by only a precious few moments, and yet it is always the realization of a great many years in the making.

Greatness is there, faintly recognizable and at many junctures, deemed unattainable. And yet it is right there.

we have been waiting for someone like you for a long time.

you have turned non basketball viewers into fans, dull moments into good basketball talk, and skeptics into believers again.

Glad you are a part of the Rockets now - if just to give us one more reason to cheer.

    Thanks for coming.

    Hey Yao,

Whats up man. For now all you are doing is talking trash to all the players you're going to school in the future. I want you to try your best when you play. If you do that you won't have to worry about making us a great team. Because you have. I hope to see you playin for us.

    Your buddy M.L

p.s Sorry i can't cheer you on in person, i can't afford it. but i'll be watching at home good luck. (I hope you get this, and everybody elses letters too.):)

    Dear Mr. Ming,
I'm not sure if you've ever been to Pakistan(bordering China at Khunjerab), but if you have you will be treated in a similar way in Houston. The hospitality is similar and I think you will take comfort in it. If you ever get the chance to go to Austin, I think you will enjoy it. People from Austin think they live in a 300 person town when it's 1 million. Everybody is openly friendly if they know you or not.

    Yao Ming,

Welcome to Houston! Relax, coach Rudy T will take good care of you.

Have fun and work hard playing the game you love.

Wait until you meet Calvin Murphy- Don't try to dress like him.

Rocket fans will support you, (Don't listen to the critics-listen to your coaches.)

    Yao,

Here is some "interview slang" you will need in order to deal with the media...

"I will give 110%" translation-I'm going to try my damnest but obviously, anything over 100% is not only an exaggeration, but an impossibility as well. And not for nothing, but 40% will be plenty to play against Nesterovic

"I'm not thinking about them yet, I'm thinking one game at a time" translation-Obviously we will smoke the Nuggets like polish sausages. I cant wait to play the Lakers on NBC next Sunday. It's time for Hannah Storm to experience the Yao-minator

"They are a young team with a lot of talent. They will only get better" translation- What's with their guards? Are Brevin Knight and Jason Williams even tall enough to get on Space Mountain? And another thing, what is with Battier's head...it looks like his brain is sticking out. And Gasol's breath....woooof. Of course they will get better, they suck, it cant get much worse.

"Hats off to him, he hit a big shot at the end" translation- That shot was horsesh*t. He couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat and you want me to believe that his hook shot from half court at the buzzer was skill ? Please.

"The refs have a tough job. That call could have gone either way. I respect their call and I'll move on." translation- If Steve Jaffe and Ed Rush were in my country, they would be caned for that call. If they think Shaq is just getting position, then I have a wall to sell then in China

Oh, and one more piece of advice....DONT ANSWER A QUESTION IN THE 3RD PERSON.

Just do it baby...we are looking forward to having you!!!!!

    Welcome to Houston.

You will fit in great here in Texas. A saying that Texan's are proud of is, "Everything's bigger in Texas." I wish you the best of luck in the NBA. I have been a fan of the NBA and the Houston Rockets for many, many years. I was so happy when the Rockets were lucky enough to win the lottery and get the first pick in the draft. I was even more excited when you were chosen as our top pick. From the news I have seen and read about you it is easy to see why you are worthy of being the first pick. You have tremendous skill, a strong work ethic, a great team-first attitude, and a desire to learn.

For what it's worth the advice I can give you is to have fun; work hard; listen to Coach Rudy T, Carroll Dawson (he knows how to teach big men well), and the rest of the Rocket's coaching staff; don't let the negative media affect you. I'm sure you will be a great player for the Rockets, the NBA, China, and the world!

    1. greatness
    2. humility
    3. arrogance; and
    4. dedication (work ethic on and off the court, nee weight room!)

learn to balance those four ingredients, and you will have the nba in the palm of one hand, the larry o'brien trophy in the other hand, and the nba will hoist you over their shoulders with both of their hands...

you are already the greatest...it's just that nobody knows it .

one last bit of advice...and remember this if nothing else:

    hold the world in contempt!

how dare any man step onto a court thinking he could defeat you! punish all that come to take the victory that is RIGHTFULLY YOURS!

oh, and if you're ever in san antonio, texas....find me. you probably don't get good mexican food over there, do you? :D

    Ming,

Welcome to Houston. I am chinese and I'm very glad you are playing for the Rockets. That way, I get to see you play more!

Congrats for being the #1 pick. There are pressures that come with being #1 but you will be fine. Just as you play with the pressure of being the best player on your National Team, you will be able to handle it here.

Rudy is a friendly player's coach and he will help you get even better.

There is quite a lot of asian food available in Houston. Some of the restaurants are actually OK. (I hold a higher standard to chinese restaurants and while they are getting better in Houston, it's not quite up to Hong Kong standards....yet).

    Anyway, welcome again,

And I hope one day, you will be able to play to the same level of greatness as Dream here and bring us some more championships!

PS. Shaq is the best now but you will be better, sooner than anyone realizes, including yourself.
