2 good things could have come out of that: 1) We win it all - Thats an obvious plus 2) We resign him. Too bad our owner is a cheap punk. Since we did not resign him and he went elsewhere, the trade looks horrible in retrospect. Had we resigned him, we would be much more dominant.
The starting rotation is looking horrible right now. We will need to score 8 runs per game like we did today to have any chance of winning. Right now our rotation is Oswalt, Miller, Redding, Nelson Cruz, and Peter Munro. How bad is that?!?!?! Will we catch the Cardinals with that starting 5? Mlicki is due back soon, and hopefully Carlos Hernandez isn't out too long. Nelson Cruz is an average long-relief guy, and Redding and Munro belong in New Orleans playing AAA ball. Atleast Kirk Saarloos' 17.00 ERA isn't on the club anymore. What we need to trade for is a veteran pitcher. Daryle Ward may make decent trade bait, but I'd prefer to trade him when his stock is a little more valuable than it is right now.
Do u know personally that there was a chance Randy would resign with us? I don't. The guy lived in Arizona for crying out loud. He was always b****ing about being too far away from his family... Freddy Garcia would be looking good in a 'Stros uni right about now...
Actually, when it was time to resign Johnson, the Astros said that they wouldnt. You dont think a 65-70 million dollar contract over 5 years would have done the trick? Its all about the money and if you havent figured that out by now then you are lost.
Uhh...wrong. Stros offered him 3 years, 33 mill...Johnson said he wanted to stay close to home. Angels, Rangers, Dodgers all offered 12 mill a year. Tru, Dbacks won the sweepstakes with like 13 mill (?).... but I think it's a moot point when it comes to family.
Is that the 70 Million I was saying. NO! Money makes the world go round. Is Bagwell playing in Boston? Is Horry, van exel, or Mcdyess playing in Houston? How many players do you know that actually play for their home team? If the money is there, they take it. Plain and simple. You cant argue this point. Had we offered 15 a year, he would have stayed. But we didnt and he left.
rezdawg is right, after all, its not like Randy told the Seattle front office that he was going to sign with Arizona as a free agent or something like that . . . . Oh wait, he did.
Uhhh...you mean like Caminiti took less $$$ to come back to Houston instead of going to Detroit? Or maybe when Biggio turned down a higher offer from the Rockies to stay in Houston? Or when Tony Gwynn repeatedly turned down higher offers to re-sign in San Diego? It was understood from the moment we made the trade that the Unit was leaving after the season. He knew it & the 'Stros front office knew it. He & his wife did not want to live in Houston, they made it quite clear that they wanted to be in Arizona.
Its different when a player has played multiple seasons for a team. Had Biggio started out with the Braves, he would have resigned with the braves.
It looks like Florida is heading into fire sale mode with the possible trade of Floyd and Dempster, maybe we should make a play for Mike Lowell. He's hitting very well and we could definately use his bat. Also, his defense at 3rd is 2nd only to Scott Rolen, not to mention he will be way cheaper and is under contract through next year. Also, consider how his being in the lineup will help Berkman and Bagwell as he will provide more protection than Hidalgo has. This team has been hot lately and Lowell would be more fuel for the fire.
I would love to make a push for lowell. I really want the astros to make some kind of a trade to help us make a run towards the playoffs.
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/n...0708&content_id=77984&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp What do y'all think about the stros getting hampton back? Not sure what it would take, but the rockies may be looking to unload neagle and hampton. Hampton, like Kile, would probably thrive again outside of that thin air. Besides, i think it's obvious that our young starting rotation is still at least a year or two away of developing the mental make up and experience it needs to thrive.
