No that's called pooling risk and it's the only way anyone affords health insurance. At a job everyone pays the same, some cost the plan more and some cost the plan less but you're spreading the risk over so many people you take advantage of economies of scale and make it affordable for all.

If we all abandoned employer plans and went and got individual plans all of our premiums would be much higher. Worse if you needed a major procedure they would cover it and then drop you or raise your rates so high you couldn't afford to keep coverage.

    AWESOME.

    More Alan Grayson.

Grayson tried to list the number of people projected to die in each Republican's district without health care next year. The Republicans flipped out, tried to silence him, and tried to get his speech struck from the record.

This is why we don't go with the Republican plan.

    Here is the intro:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FfNVWINLfKs&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FfNVWINLfKs&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

1:15 minutes in, in the middle of his speech, the Republicans move to recess the house.

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/K1pSfEyqOQI&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/K1pSfEyqOQI&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

But when the house reconvened, Grayson started right back up.

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yJ2xYiYcQi4&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yJ2xYiYcQi4&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

So the republic version would leave the sickest patients uncovered because they are too expensive, essentially creating a GOP death panel.

That's ok by the tea-partiers and Sarah Palin because it wouldn't affect "real" Americans.

so you gonna give up your health insurance?

or do you, like everyone else, need other people's help to pay for your medical costs

Just don't complain then when your garbage service is a bit spotty during peak flu times.

Don't complain when your food is full of germs.

Don't complain when hospitals charge you even more because they still have to treat the uninsured.

Don't complain when someone else's kids gets your kids sick.

Don't complain when there's an out of control epidemic and wonder why we as a nation aren't prepared.

You can pretend you live on an island...but you don't. You don't have to pay for anyone elses health insurance...

Just like you don't pay for anyone else's highway, education, bailout, or war.

Underthe health care proposal currently going through, the vast majority of people would pay for their own health insurance, in fact it would be mandatory for people to carry insurance. The only people who would get subsidies are the people who simply cannot afford insurance.

Do you believe that the poor do not deserve health insurance?

Myopic attitude. Life is where s**t happens. You could be perfectly healthy one minute and be diagnosed with something very expensive to treat the next. Our system is flawed in that we allow people to go broke because they can't afford to pay for a 5-6 day hospital visit. You can't just change one or two things in the system (med mal reform and high-risk pools) and expect things to get better. You have to revamp the entire friggin thing.

If everybody has to have insurance, then more premiums are collected. There are still a bunch of people that choose not to get insurance because they share your "superman" attitude that they would spend more with insurance than without. Will this make up for those who are denied insurance because of pre-existing conditions? I don't think we will know for a while.

The whole point of health insurance is shared risk. If you want to pay for your own health care costs, and don't want to pay for anyone else's, why don't you just drop your insurance and pay your own health care bills?

This is a pretty good illustration of a liberal point of view. Even if we take the CBO estimate at face value (and they are notorious at underestimating costs), only a liberal could say with a straight face that a massive new entitlement program that is funded through hefty tax increases and questionable future cost savings would actually "save" $36 billion more than the Republican plan.

The Democratic bill has an estimated cost of $1.055 trillion, while the GOP bill would cost $61 billion. Using my math, the GOP bill would save $994 billion vs. the Democratic plan.

As far as the deficit projections go, let's not forget a few other accounting gimmicks that Pelosi's bill uses to achieve this - like front loading the tax increases.

Our leaders in Washington should be focusing on the economy right now, not adding to an already-bloated bureaucracy funded by job-killing tax increases.

Someone's going to die? Anybody in this country can walk into an emergency room and get treatment. Most people do.

Who is going to die? That is a crock.

So basically it would make health insurance cheaper but would not give health care to people without insurance and does nothing to address the problems associated with uninsured people being forced to go to the ER everytime they need help.

    No thanks.

    Don't like either proposal

Let Charity work be done by Charities. The repub's pockets are lined by the insurance lobby and the dem's pockets are in with the trial lawyers and the looters who want handouts for their useless constituents.

Who gets hurt? Small business which is the lifeblood of this country. I like what Ron Paul said, nothing can be given for free. It has to be taken from someone else.

Government needs to stay out of the economy. If 1/6 of the economy is healthcare, continued government encroachment is going to leave what else to the rest of us to make business and money?

Part of the GOP savings comes from encouraging businesses and providers to reduce the number of things covered... so not only does the GOP plan fail to cover additional folks, it takes those that are covered and explicitly tells providers to offer less services, which means if you want the same level of coverage you have now, you have to get supplemental or pay for it out of pocket. Regardless, the GOP plan accelerates the unsustainable cost burden on people not rich enough to pay out of pocket for stuff, which is virtually all of us... except maybe the Republicans writing the bill.

It also does nothing regarding pre-existing conditions, which is an absolute approval of currently existing for-profit death panels.

    Here's more...

It's an abomination and should not be taken seriously unless you want more Americans to die and you want to pay an increasing percentage of your income for less coverage.

shocker...the GOP concerned more about the carriers than their consituents (I guess to be fair most poor constituents probably didn't vote for them).

Exactly. The GOP bill makes existing insurance less effective.
