I'm having a problem with my remote control to my garage door. The remote is just a simple one button opener. The problem I have is the remote opens the door without a problem but will not close it at all. When I push the button to close it the motor on the garage ceiling makes several clicking noises and that is it. The button on the garage wall I use to close my door with will close it if I hold it down but I formerly could just push the button and it would go down without holding it. Rarely the garage door will start to come down just a little bit but it stops and goes back up. My girl's garage door seems to be fine. She has Homelink controls on her rear-view mirror. The Homelink button and the button that controls her door on the garage wall all work fine. By the way, our garage openers are Chamberlain. Not sure what model number and all that though. Anybody know what could be causing my issues? Also, how can you tell if your garage door opener has rolling codes or not? We would like to get a keypad for both doors too but every one that we have seen says for rolling code openers. How can you tell about that? TIA for any and all information and help.
everytime i have a problem with my garage door opener like this, i google the problem and find the fix. in all likelihood it's very simple. my first suggestion is to unplug it...wait about 10 seconds...plug it back in and try again.
I do not doubt that it is something extremely simple. I tried Yahoo! search for some answers but really didn't come back with anything. Maybe I do need to Google it. I'll try the unplugging when I get home tonight. Thanks.
make sure the sensors are cleaned off...or there's nothing in their way. google the name of the door opener model and "won't close" or something like that.
Yeah, that was the first thing I did, cleaned the sensors and moved any debris (spiderwebs, etc.) but that still had no effect.
Wait a minute.. it opens up with ease... but won't close? Maybe the garage or the house belonged to Paris Hilton... or my ex-girlfriend?
the sensor is not seeing eye to eye. the sensor direction is off, you need to point it to each other. Something must have bumped it and got it out of position. make sure the light is on. when you block the light path w/ your feet, you can see that the light is off. right now, the light is always off, so the opener thinks that something is in the way of the door so it won't shut.
THere are two sensors on each side of the door usually at the bottom. They should have a solid light on. If they are blinking it means that are not lined up. They need to point to one another. Sometimes they get knocked out of position. Sounds like you can override the sensor when you press the button and keep it pressed.
I had a similar problem a couple of years ago (thought it was the sensors too), had to replace the garage door opener. I googled it and found out it was common for the main board to malfunction after x amount of years.
probably not related, but i had a couple of issues with my garage door. i think it's like 30 years old unit. at first, i replaced the batteries. then one day, ceiling that holds the unit collapsed on 1 side. i had to drill it in. then it was not closing or opening all the way through. it got stuck half way. i had to call someone to fix it. what happened was, there is a latch on the side that has been causing friction. so the guy removed it and reset the chains. no problems since.
When I was doing research on Craftsman garage door openers, there were people who only had theirs for half year to a few years who ended up with a similar problem. I spent hours researching garage door openers to try to make sure that didn't happen to me. From what a lot of people said online, they said there was something wrong with the main board that malfunctioned causing them to behave this way. I'm not sure if your brand uses the same parts as Craftsman, but I wouldn't rule it out.
I think I remember reading somewhere that Chamberlain is like a sub brand of Craftsman. Oh well, I'm gonna try a few more remedies tonight. Thanks for the tips everybody.
Lil Pun, Is it lubed well? Seriously, these things have a hair trigger resistance-sensor to keep the thing from hurting some idiot who closes the door on themselves, (or in Mrs. B-Bob's case, hits the remote with the car still exiting, executing a Pac-Man on the car hood.) So if it's a little tiny bit stuck when it is up, it will sense the resistance everytime it tries to do down. This would explain why holding it down helps, since that basically tells it to go past the resistance with repeated "go" signals. This is my bet. Lube it or look for something being slightly out of line when it's in the "up" position. (obligatory that's what she said, you craven infidels.)
So, if my garage door is out of line is that something I can fix or do I need some overhead door company to come fix it. It doesn't look out of line to me but you never know.....
Lube it really good (in the up position) and see what that does.* Seriously. This very thing has happened to my (ancient) garage door system. * = pre-screened for Swoly-D
check the chain/screw drive and make sure it is lubricated. it might be getting stuck at a certain spot. oil the door wheels also. if its a chain and loose that could cause a problem. I doubt its the sensor since its just one spot in the process that causes the problem and it works fine the rest of the time.
