I'm surprised Peter Brown is doing so poorly. No runoff if one candidate receives more than 50% of the vote.
i understand it to be the winner must get a majority of the votes and not just a plurality of votes. if there isn't a candidate with >50%, the top two candidates will have a runoff in december...
Roy Morales. He was on the ballot, but not included in this poll. He will not win, but he is the candidate that I like the best out of the four. Considering the size, the wealth and the diversity of the city of Houston, it is disappointing that we do not have better candidates running for Mayor than those on the ballot this time around. Very disappointing indeed.
I don't know about Brown's supporters but I would think the conservatives who largely backed Morales would not vote for a lesbian.
Hmm, so do conservatives vote for the black man or the gay white woman? Or do they vote at all, considering hardly anyone voted anyway?
I believe you're probably correct, but there's also a very good chance that most conservatives, with their candidate defeated, won't see much of a distinction in the remaining candidates and won't even bother to vote in the runoff election. Turnout today was bad, even with some ballot initiatives to vote on. My guess is that turnout for the runoff will be abysmal.
Please tell me this is not how you view the election. I hope you can go a little deeper than that, but somehow I doubt it.
What is compelling to conservatives is not the realization that Locke is a black man or that Parker is a gay woman. It is that both of them are rock solid liberals. Probably most conservatives will sit this one out. Seriously, what reason would a conservative have for voting for either one of these people?
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6700242.html Morales refused to concede before all the returns had come in. About 50 of his supporters stood in a circle and held hands while Eric Story led them in a prayer. “Lord give us victory. We're going to fight as conservatives,” said Story. “We're going to see our city and our state and our nation turn around. God, it's not over. We can't stand by and see the lifestyle that's assuming she's going to win take office.” So in other words, they're openly praying Parker doesn't win simply because of her sexual orientation? At a campaign function, no less?
Our Father Who Art in Heaven Hallowed Be Thy Name Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be Done On Earth as it is in Heaven Give us today our victory against gays and forgive their gayness, as we do not forgive those who are gay against us Lead the gays not into temptation But deliver us from gays for thine is the kingdom (of no gays) and the glory (but not for gays) and the power (to crush gays) Forever and Ever. Amen.
So if the choices were going to be Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh, which one of these two would you vote for? Or, would you stay home?
