Shouldn't this be NBA Dish or something? I don't know the answer to your question, but I'd be skeptical of the claim.

I say if he didn't learn how to read before the NBA, theres no reason for him to learn after he began his career.

I think Dexter Manly - washinton redskins - did not learn until
he was in the NFL. So there is a precedent.

Didn't I hear that about Kevin Garnett? (or did he ever...)

Sometimes I worry about these guys who have so little successful education that they can't even read their own contracts. They could be taken advantage of... hope they have a good agent...

I think it's safe to say KG can read...he seems like a pretty intelligent guy.

Kobe is pretty smart too...he got a 1080 on his SATs.

My High School's star basketball player got a scholarship for college basketball, but failed after one semester because they actually wanted him to read. Very sad. I know some of the teachers that just let him slide by.....

Joe Joe, there are tons of high schools that do the exact same thing. A couple of years ago we had a star football recruit that eventually ended up going to Oklahoma, but his ACT scores were really, really bad. So bad that at one point no one was sure if he'd be able to go to a Division 1 school. Eventually our school found some loophole and he was able to take the ACT behind closed doors with no time limit and while our school counselor was in the room (no one else was there to monitor).

I heard that the first word Shawn Kemp learned was

    P-A-T-E-R-N-I-T-Y. Can somebody verify this?

You can find Shawn Kemp playing ball in Houston during the summer times.

    Okay, okay settle down stalkers.

You can find him at ...

    MOFFIT PARK.

after he hits and miss his J, he sits on the park table, and smokes that J right after. It's true (or that is what i heard.)

Yeah, but he was there last summer.

    Oh, address?

Hammerly, and Beltway 8. West side of town.

Not that standardized tests mean jack, but since when did a 1080 SAT make someone (athlete or otherwise) "pretty smart"?

I live down the way from that park. Why would Kemp or any NBA player want to play there? The park is usually half-empty and the competition is less than spectacular.

The answer is in your own post. Just look . . .

Haven't you seen how big Shawn Kemp is now?

Haven't you seen how "less than spectacular" Shawn Kemp's game has been over the last 3 years.

Well, its not genius level, but a 1080 is higher than the national average for everyone, and I'm gonna bet that a 1080 is near the top of SAT scores for a lot of NBA players. Kobe is probably the one or one of the few players thats actually come straight from HS to NBA that have had a decent test score.

Last I heard, seven kids by six mothers. Don't know where the count stands now. (given the state of his body and his game, it might not be so easy for him to "get some" these days)

Some things don't require an education. :)
