I have a furnace problem. Now that it is getting kinda cold I have turned on my furnace and it seem to not be working. I turn it on (forced air kind) , vent fan turns on , glow rod turns on , gas turns on and then there is fire. About 2 seconds later the whole thing turns off. I thought it was the pilot(glow rod) but it seems to be working once I started looking at it. Can someone give me an idea. thanks......
That is basically the pilot thing that starts the flames..... right? If so, that thing seems to be working cuz the flames start for a couple seconds then the whole thing just shuts down.
It's that little rod the pilot flame burns on. It's a safety sensor of sorts, so when the pilot goes off, then it shuts down the burner. If it goes bad, then it will incorrectly shut down the burner....even when the pilot is still on.
Also, make sure your outside vent is not blocked. The scenario you described is the exact same scenario that happened to me. The outside air vent was blocked with snow (probably not a problem where you currently are). I removed the snow and all worked well. Yours could be blocked with something else.
If you have a "glow rod" (actually called an HSI), then your system doesn't even have a thermocouple, but a flame sensor, that essentially does the same thing. I am with Bobrek on this. Check the vent coming out of the draft inducer. Also, check the tube that goes between the pressure switch and draft inducer to make sure it is not blocked.
+1. I had the same problem last year and the HVAC person said the same thing. Cleaned it out and it worked... You might be able to do this also. He did a test where he connected a wire to from one point on of the circuit board to another and read the blinking led. On the inside cover of my furnace (carrier 58pav) door is the list of error codes and how to do the error check. Of course, try at your own risk.
