Jeff and I both like his cd. His voice reminds me of a Houston singer named David Rice. He was really talented and a great songwriter. He had one major-label release a few years back, but it never went anywhere. Too bad. I think mfclark may like Mayer also -- he has one of Mayer's lyrics as his signature.
wow...wish i could have heard david rice. mayer is coming to town in august at verizon wireless theater... i really like his lyrics..and his music has a dave matthews quality to it that i really like. go figure, huh? plus..his last name is really, really close to mine! that means absolutely nothing, but i still feel it's worth mentioning!
He reminds me of a more bland pop version of Dave Matthews but he is a very good songwriter. I can get you some David Rice stuff if you like.
somehow i knew you would! we may be on opposite ends of the political spectrum, but i bet our cd collections are remarkably similar! Jeff -- that would be great...you have extra copies?? i don't want you to go to any expense...
He's a Dave Matthew's Band Parrot. Acoustic power pop...gruff vocals, slick strumming, over produced....not all necessarily bad, just not anything new or original. I still listen to him a lot. The songs are so catchy. I recommend the songs No Such Thing (a hit, though not written by Mayer) and St. Patrick's Day (should be a hit). Overall, his CD (Room for Squares) is still just typical. A bunch of filler (even though I like a lot of His Own songs) based around one hit (not his song) used to sell the CD.
Kim, you are on some serious hard crack if you think his CD is mostly filler. Its one of the better all around (ie not much filler) cds I've had recently. I bought the CD way back in December and his label had his CD discounted heavily (i got it for like 7.99 at one of the Mall Chain record stores!) and now that its a hit I looked and its up around 15 or so at most places... My favorites are Your Body Is a Wonderland (this one is the next single) Love Song For No One (got me hooked on JM) Neon City Love
Hm...I agree to a certain extent with Kim...but not all the way.. When I heard "No Such thing" and "Neon" (which I saw on Carson Crappy's Last Call)...I thought he had a great voice and a knack for catchy pop hooks. Then i borrowed the cd from a friend...and let's just say the other tracks didn't have me going as much. I like "Love song for no one"...but really no other song on the album appealed to me (esp. "Your Body is a Wonderland"...i don't dig that one) Oh well...just my personal opinion...i'm a guy that thrives on catchy hooks...so sue me. His voice and guitar playing are impeccable, tho.
Compared to most of the crap on the radio, Mayer stands head-and-shoulders above when it comes to writing and production. Max: Drop me an email.
My stepbrother is really into Mayer. He told me that the upcoming John Mayer concert sold out in like 45 seconds. Is that true?
Mayer's concerts seem to be a really hot ticket, Rx2. I dont know if it sold out that quick and who knows how large the venue is (is it some 300 seat coffee house type place or a real concert hall?), but I know even before he really hit he was selling out most of his concerts. His concert at some place in Dallas in March was sold out months ahead of time.
Anyone listen to Ryan Adams ? (not to be confused with Canadian Bryan Adams) His song "La Cienga Just Smiled" is really good.
Max-- My sister saw John Mayer in concert when he was in town last time. She had never heard of him but a friend of her's took my sister to the show (she had an extra ticket). My sister loved his music. I have never seen Dave Matthews in concert. Next time they're coming to town I know you're gonna call me before you get tickets Max.
I've heard a few Mayer songs off the last CD, and really liked them. Great lyrics are one of the most important things I look for in music (as opposed to just a good beat/rhythm) and Mayer's seem FAR from cookie cutter, imo. Maybe reading this thread will get me off my butt and into Circuit City to pick it up... Outlaw, I've been a big fan of Ryan Adams since he was part of Whiskeytown, and I've got both of his CDs, Heartbreaker and Gold (still my favorite CD this year). The Whiskeytown stuff is similar, but a little rougher around the edges. There is a more 'country' sound to it, but definitely Adams. Adams is one of the best songwriters today, and is known to improvise/make up songs on the fly at some of his live shows. You might want to look around for some of his bootlegs...very good indeed...
I've been waiting for someone to notice that! I've actually only heard "No Such Thing," but I really, really like it as a song - and this after thinking I'd hate it when I first heard it. I've been waiting to save up money to buy his CD, actually. Anyone who hasn't heard "No Such Thing," though, needs to give it a shot.
John Mayer is cool... Solo Artists are making a comeback.. Anybody here like Glen Phillips besides me? He's the ex-Toad the wet sprocket front man. Great lyrics...very talented.
I really like Glen's voice and I think his lyrics are some of the most profound and beautiful to be found in popular music today. The problem is I don't like his solo music. He has the tendency to be a little too somber on his own. When he was with Toad, they lightened him just enough. If you like Glen, you may want to check out Duncan Sheik's second album, "Humming." It's in a similar vein -- solo male singer, interesting voice, fascinating lyrics.
I really like his lyrics and I think he is a terrific songwriter but he isn't the same without Toad. Coil was my favorite because it really pushed the band towards Phillips' style but his solo stuff is just too moody for me. He needed the energy of the other guys in Toad to really make his stuff work. On his own, he's kinda dull.
