Probably because he, for the moment, doesn't want to coach. I think his contract with ESPN/ABC goes out for a couple more years.

As for assistant coach, I doubt the Rockets wants to pay an assistant the kind of money he makes with ESPN/ABC right now, especially when the current assistants are quite capable.

exactly. Jeff isn't working because he doesn't want to. He could pretty much name his job if he so desired.

Uncle D should have hired him for the astros job...talk about awesome.

Even if he wants to come back to coaching, I doubt he's just gonna take any job. He might take a pay cut for the right situation, but I kinda doubt he'll give up money, take a job with, say, Memphis, and at the same time exclude himself from the possibility of getting a better job when one opens up (like when Phil Jackson retires).

As for the Rockets assistant... like I said, Turner, Sikma and Dunn have done a pretty good job. Turner is also a pretty serious head coach candidate. I just can't see Jeff Van Gundy adding too many things these guys don't know already. It might even disturb the existing chemistry.

Why do people give JVG all the credit for our defense during his tenure? It was Tom Thibodeau.

Ditto, JVG is a solid coach and execs around the league know that.

I think if nate doesn't have a good showing, he might get fired or not renewed. That's a team and a job jvg couldn't turn down. They have enough experience and a lot of talent, but I don't like the way they play defense. They should be a top 5 defense and they're not.

JVG also deserved credit for the Rox D-Fence, just refer back to his Knicks Glorious D when he didn't have Thibodeau. I actually liked it when he was pissed about Bad D or Missed Assignments because after most of the timeouts, the Rockets played Better Defensively and with more Intensity. You almost knew he was going to call a timeout. But that was his style. I also like Adelman's staff and their Even Tempered coaching style. The Rox D should get better as the new players play more minutes together and become better acclimated to the system
