You're acting like once they starts concentrating on other forms, their boxing won't deteriorate.

And really, old man mike tyson is going to win?

Roy Jones Jr. has the right idea.

Both are great in their own aspects.

Yeah bro I understand that, that why I said Mike Tyson prime. It be really hard to beat Couture right now because he still fights.

Again I watch the UFC/MMA and Pride when it was up, Fedor is a freaking beast but i'm just saying that it's harder to make it in boxing.

This argument is flawed. The man competed in wrestling all through high school and college. Since he did go to a Div. I school (having a ton of success in wrestling), he could only take up one sport, which was wrestling. Otherwise he would have competed in college football as well. He didn't try out for the Vikings until the age of 27, where as almost all football players begin their careers right out of college. Age and no high school or college experience worked against him. From what I gather, athleticism was not a problem for him during tryouts. He was bad at picking up reads which he would have been better at had he played high school and college football. And he made the final cut despite these drawbacks. I don't think his inability to get in the NFL reflects accurately why MMA could be inferior to other sports.

    +1...

Old, old, OLD Ray Mercer put MMA champion Tim Sylvia on his ass in 9 seconds...

    Come on now.

That's Ray Mercer folks... George Foreman? Mike Tyson?

A muffled jab would do the trick.

Mhmm, Mercer also lost to Kimbo Slice via SUBMISSION. Kimbo, who's anything but a top or even mid-level MMA fighter at this point.

Any power hitting boxer could have a shot, because of the punching power they possess, there's no doubt. One well-landed strike could put any guy on the mat. However, you put a top heavyweight boxer vs. someone like Fedor, and I'd take Fedor at least 8 times out of 10. It's just a different fight entirely. Power and boxing prowess can get you far, but if a skilled MMA fighter can get the boxer to the ground, which he probably can, then the boxer is pretty much done.

Boxing is one-dimensional, but definitely a great sport (has fallen off big time the last few years). MMA is multi-dimension, new and exciting, and has a bright future. Without a big name Heavyweight class for boxing, I don't think boxing will hold off MMA in terms of popularity.

I won't speak for todays Heavyweights, but a George Foreman, Ken Norton, Mike Tyson etc, would destroy Fedor 10 times out of 10, imo...

I think hitting the neck is illegal too. UFC doesn't allow kicks and stomps to the head when down, but they were legal in Pride (Hopkins would've loved Pride! lol)

People thinking boxers with little training would be able to take on and "destroy" MMA fighters in a MMA fight obviously haven't watched enough MMA. With enough training to avoid takedowns and submissions they could carve out a nice MMA career and even dominate, but it takes time. A good example are the many K1 fighters that have tried MMA. Quite a few successful ones, but even after years of practice most are still susceptible to getting submitted by less athletic opponents. Starting early with a mixed background is obviously best, but for those that start from a pure discipline, its easier for those that start with a grappling background (wrestling, jujitsu, judo) than a striking one.

A boxer with no MMA training would stand little chance against the likes of Fedor, sorry.

Also, I bet a MMA fighter would gladly take on a pure boxer, whereas a boxer would probably not do the same. Why? Because a MMA fighter has training in and against boxing, would have a better gameplan and chance against a pure boxer. The boxer's only chance would be a knockout, there's no way they'd last until decision. Everyone loves the knockouts in any fighting sport, but in MMA, they're not common.

knote32: About Sylvia, he's a former UFC champion* but that was when the UFC's heavyweight division was very watered down, as the the top heavyweights were in Pride at that time. Pretty safe to say he's no where close to the top tier atm. Have you seen any of Fedor's fights knote32? While no where as explosive Tyson, he's pretty damn agile for his size, and his experience under MMA rules and technique would put him at a huge advantage vs Tyson.

If you want to make the argument that an in his prime Tyson with a few years of serious MMA training would dominate Fedor, it would at least be a plausible position to take. Couple months worth of training? No way.

I disagree. George Foreman could knock him out with a light jab...

Notice how only the 40 year olds on this site are in favor of Boxing.

MMA is growing incredibly fast as a sport. Both defenitely take tons of practice and all that but Boxing is only one aspect and thats boring, UFC has submissions, knockouts with hands and feet. Boxing is dying, all the good fighters are becoming old and retiring, and today's top fighters are all 5'3 and like 130 pounds, nice! Fedor Emelinanenko would DESTROY both of them in a street fight

I'm under 40 and MMA sucks. They don't have a true system to judge rounds. If you dominate a round it's the same as winning a close round. There is too many organizations involved with MMA, making it have no true champion. It's more on the line with wrestling without the predetermine victory. I will say MMA is a sport but it's not an entertaining one. Much of the fights are two men on the ground grappling trying to wrestler their opponents into a submission hold.

All boxing truly has to do is put a major fight a year on a national network and it would be killing in rating. Both sports MMA and boxing heavyweight divisions are a falling process right now and that's why both sports are struggling. When you put a major MMA fight up against a major boxing fight boxing numbers are always higher on the paper view sales. Boxing sells its athletes while MMA is selling their organizations and no one besides a MMA purest knows any of its athletes. The biggest joke to MMA is in the UFC the heavyweight champion won the title in his 4th fight with a 3-1 record. MMA makes itself into a joke. Also what helps MMA is the sports bars are ramming the sport down our throats showing MMA events and not boxing because it's cheaper to show.
